Naruto is a classic anime/manga that with a long list of characters to explore. We’ve written many detailed analyses on individual characters within that series, but having a cumulative document providing a big picture overview can be helpful. Below, we’re going to list off examples of each of the 16 personality types within the Naruto series. We’ll highlight one in particular that we believe exemplifies that specific personality type well, but we’ll list off other examples at the bottom of each type’s section. Of course, we will include links to each character’s individual analysis (assuming one’s been written), if you wish to explore the character’s type further. Obviously, some characters have been left out because we didn’t type literally every character in that show but the main ones should all be here. You’re welcome to share your thoughts in the comments, but be aware that we don’t intend to debate any of these characters in the comments.

The 16 Types Through Naruto Shippuden

ISFP

Chōji Akimichi

“Experience is cool and all, but real cooking know-how comes straight from the heart.”

Choji is a kind, sensitive and loyal individual. He draws upon his own personal feelings in order to gain strength in battle. The most notable emotion that he uses to motivate himself is anger, which Fi + Se users commonly excel at using as a source of strength and fuel. He’s also prone to over-indulgence, struggles to be disciplined, and can get surprisingly rigid and obstinate when his values are at stake.

INFP

Nagato Uzumaki

“Do you understand pain a little now? If you don’t share someone’s pain, you can never understand them.”

Nagato is an example of an extremely damaged INFP. He is sensitive and idealistic in spite of the hard life he’s lived. He dreams of and works to obtain it . However, further tragedy strikes and Nagato turns inward, focusing heavily on his pain. While still determined to “lead the world down the road to stability and to peace”, he decides to take an alternate route, which involves forcing everyone to share in his pain.

ESFP

Naruto Uzumaki

“I don’t care who I have to fight!
If he rips my arms out, I’ll kick him to death!
If he rips my legs off, I’ll bite him to death!
If he rips my head off, I’ll stare him to death!
And if he gouges out my eyes, I’ll curse him from the grave!
Even If I’m torn to shreds, I’m taking Sasuke back from Orochimaru!”

Naruto is impulsive, competitive, action-oriented, resolute, and straightforward. He attacks his problems head on, chipping away at every challenge little by little. He’s loyal to a fault, refusing to give up on anyone he cares about. While he has an overarching goal that he sets his sights on for the entirety of the series, his greatest flaw lies in his failure to think things through or plan for the future in any significant way.

Jiraiya

“Listen up! The toad sage is only my cover! Allow me to reveal my true identity. From the north to the south, and the east to the west, not even the spirits can defeat this Sannin. The white maned toad charmer! A red hot ninja who strikes fear in the hearts of men! Master Jiraiya! Yes! I’m speaking of none other than myself!”

Jiraiya is idealistic, eccentric, imaginative, and energetic. He deeply desires to see peace come to the Shinobi world, and he wholeheartedly believes that to be possible, although he is unable to find the solution himself. While he is both empathetic and people-focused, Jiraiya seems unable to stay in one place for too long. Instead, he travels around seeking inspiration for his books, hoping to use that medium as a means to change the world.

Shikamaru Nara

“Sometimes I wish I was a cloud… Just floating along, going wherever the breeze takes me.”

Shikamaru is laid back, apathetic, reserved, logical, and calm. While often typed as an INTP, he possesses a mentality common to that of ISTPs. He struggles to be ambitious or see beyond the moment, although he eventually does find a sense of a purpose. Shikamaru believes figuring something out for yourself is a valuable part of training. He’s also extremely strategic, but needs to retreat inside his head in order to sort through his thoughts and determine the best course of action.

Kakashi Hatake

“I’m telling you this because you don’t get it. You think you get it, which is not the same as actually getting it. Get it?”

Kakashi is aloof, analytical, independent, and somewhat quirky. His younger self gets caught in a Ti-Si loop due to the tragedy surrounding his father. This prompts him to become a stickler for the rules for a time. Adult Kakashi, in stark contrast, is much more laid back, prone to distraction, and constantly running late. He’s an out-of-the-box thinker who comes up with creative ways to deal with his students, and effective strategies when facing a foe.

Tsunade Senju

“This isn’t like plotting a sequel to your novel! We don’t have any time to waste here!”

Tsunade is impatient, action-oriented, reactive, and indulgent. Her younger self is more passionate and personable, but tragedy makes her much harsher and abrasive. She’s shown to chronically avoid responsibility. Even as Hokage, she finds ways to avoid working while still looking like she is. However, in spite all this, she’s loyal to the Leaf Village and her friends. She proves herself willing to risk everything at a split second’s notice to keep those she cares about safe.

Suigetsu Hozuki

“Look, Kabuto, you’re not planning on trying to absorb Sasuke are you? And would that make you Kabuke or Sasuto?”

Suigetsu is critical, opinionated, and constantly questioning things. However, in spite of all this, he’s not one to try to force his way of thinking onto others. He comes off as apathetic or unbothered by most of what happens around him. He teams up with Sasuke, but mostly appears to just be along for the ride, rather than having a sense of greater purpose. Suigetsu enjoys poking fun at people, meddling, and using the behavior of others to his advantage.

Hinata Hyuga

“A ninja always keeps an eye on the weather. Now do you see how important it is to be ready to take precautions before any trouble starts?”

Hinata is timid, quiet, cautious, supportive, and compassionate. She follows the rules without complaint, and strives to encourage harmony amongst her fellow ninja. Her kind and gentle nature is both a strength and an obstacle that she is forced to overcome. Early on, Hinata fears greatly that she will never change. However, this fear and Naruto’s positive example drive her to challenge herself. She eventually grows to be a formidable ninja and an invaluable asset in helping Naruto achieve his goals.

Itachi Uchiha

“You focus on the trivial, and lose sight of what is most important, Change is impossible in this fog of ignorance. How can we evolve when regulation is all we know?”

Itachi is perceptive, abstract, and big picture oriented. He is willing to do even the most gruesome tasks if it’s for the greater good. Itachi believes in self-sacrifice and working from the shadows to ensure peace. He’s the type to anticipate future events and create strategies and contingency plans based on them. The way he thinks is a bit of a mystery, partially due to his tendency to avoid explaining himself. Of course, this only further supports him being an INFJ.

ESFJ

Sakura Haruno

“Naruto’s here because he’s made up his mind. My resolve is nothing compared to his now! I’m supposed to be a ninja, but all I’ve ever done is lean on him and cry… I was supposed to change that… I came here and I thought I was ready. But I can’t do anything… I can’t say anything. The only thing that remains for me…is to believe in them!”

Sakura is protective, empathetic, and emotionally driven. She’s often shown heavy-handedly enforcing harmony or basic social niceties within her team. Sakura is unafraid to express her emotions, and appears deeply bothered by those who seem to have none. She’s also cautious, meticulous, and studious which allows her to excel in medical ninjutsu. However, she is highly self-critical. Sakura constantly falls into the trap of comparing herself to others, and using this to determine her self-worth.

He treats his students like a part of his family, especially Rock Lee, and encourages them to work as a team to complete their goals. Yamato

“You might think I’m being unnecessarily cautious, but that’s the way I am. Anyone have a problem with that?”

Serious, focused, and rigid, Yamato brings some much needed structure to Team 7 after all of the drama the team had experienced. He has a no-nonsense attitude and isn’t afraid to use violence or intimidation to get things done, provided it’s the most efficient tactic. However, after the team gets to know him better, his intimidation methods seem to lose their edge. He’s cautious, detail-oriented, and often berates others for unnecessarily risky and excessive behavior.

INTJ

Neji HyugaNeji

“Father, is a person’s destiny a thing like a cloud flowing with an inescapable flow? Or can a person choose the flow he wishes… I still don’t know the answer to this. Either way the destination may be the same in the end. However by choosing to live like the latter, a person can live and strive towards a goal. And in this match I have finally understood those who have that are truly strong. Father, I have but one goal, I want to become stronger… Enough not to lose to anyone… That’s how I feel. Father, the birds are flying freely today… They look so happy.”

While often typed as an ISTJ, Neji actually focuses heavily on abstract concepts. While forced to conform to the rules of his station, young Neji is extremely unhappy with the role that’s been thrust upon him. He complains bitterly about being trapped by fate and destiny, unable to see a way out until Naruto shows him a different perspective. Beyond this, Neji proves himself to be strategic, disciplined, and goal-oriented. He works tirelessly to become the best shinobi that he can be.

As an ESTJ, Tobirama institutes the backbone and structure of the Village Hidden in the Leaves. He is prone to taking extreme measures to deal with problems and has a keen forward-thinking mind. The most responsible of his three brothers, he is often the one to take the lead and protect the others. While relatively cautious in some areas, Tobirama also has an experimental side, which results in him dabbling in and creating a large amount of forbidden jutsu.
