Te:

“My name is Sasuke Uchiha. I hate a lot of things, and I don’t particularly like anything. What I have is not a dream, because I will make it a reality. I’m going to restore my clan, and kill a certain someone.

“Having too many bonds causes one to lose focus, weakening their strongest wish, their greatest desire.”

“Don’t get in my way, you screw up.”

“I have long since closed my eyes… My only goal is in the darkness.”

“I understand now. Even if I must take the devil’s fruit, I must gain power. I am an avenger.”

The first thing most people think of when they hear the name “Sasuke Uchiha” is probably anger, vengeance, and his goal. Many try to associate his goal with an Ni vision, however, in reality, Te is the goal oriented function, and Sasuke Uchiha’s personality wreaks of Te. It’s the strongest function he demonstrates, and I’m going to try to explain why. Sasuke is incredibly organized and disciplined. He has far outclassed his fellow classmates in the academy before even enrolling. He doesn’t demonstrated the same genius as his brother Itachi (as their father notes), but Sasuke practices and practices.

Sasuke looks for the quickest and most efficient path toward achieving his goal, and follows it, no matter what the cost or risk. He gives up the village, Team 7, and even his own code and morals begin to slip. Sasuke goes with Orochimaru knowing full well that Orochimaru will eventually try to take over his body. He knows that that is the next quickest step in gaining power, so he goes despite the risk. Sasuke is also shown throwing caution to the wind on multiple occasions, contrary to an introverted dominant’s instincts. For instance, when he faces Naruto and Team 7 for the first time since joining Orochimaru, Sasuke is quick to want to use a secret technique that he has been working on for some time. Orochimaru rebukes him for being too hasty, telling him to save his trump card for later. Sasuke also rushes into the Hokage summit without a plan, and him and his team barely make it out alive. (Same goes for his attack on Killer Bee.) Sasuke usually faces things head on, not afraid to jump right into the middle of conflict. Additionally, when being paralleled to how Itachi masterfully struck the bull’s eye on every single target mid-air, Sasuke, rather than using focused and precise attacks, simply destroys the entire arena with his Chidori, which is counter to what you might expect from an introverted dominant. (This is shown just before he attacks Orochimaru.)

Sasuke is incredibly blunt and harsh in his speech, even as an adult. He frequently sounds rude, arrogant and bossy, which are common side effects of Te attempting to exert control on it’s external environment. While he is clearly in emotional turmoil at multiple points during Shippuden and the original Naruto series, as anyone in his situation would be, Sasuke usually has a pretty tight grip on his emotions, not allowing them to get in the way of accomplishing his goal. Many people try to peg him as an introvert because of how standoffish and distant he is. However, Te does not require people interaction to function, and his tragic past causes him to withdraw.

Si:

“I finally… I finally got my first bit of revenge for Itachi… it’s like the disgrace of the Uchiha clan is being cleansed. Like I’m separating the Uchiha clan from the rotten ninja world. You might even say it’s what Konoha always wanted. You always repudiated the Uchiha clan, so now we will disappear from your memories just like you always wanted. When I kill everyone in Konoha! By severing the bond, we will be purified! That will be the true revival of the Uchiha clan!”

“Weaknesses? Listen, he was full of weaknesses. He was a good-for nothing. But he pulled himself up with his own strength and became Hokage… You don’t need to understand who Naruto is now, you need to know the Naruto who made it all the way here.”

“It’s not the future I dream of anymore. Only the past.”

“My dream doesn’t exist in the future. My dream lies in the past. That’s the only place where it exists.”

“I’m suffering now because I had those ties. How on earth could you possibly understand what it feels like to lose all that!?”

“He needs time to reconfirm his decision and resolve, by immersing himself in sentimentality and retracing the past.”Said Orichimaru about Sasuke.

“Two brothers whose abilities are identical. How could what your eyes perceive be so different?” – Danzo to Sasuke

We apologize in advance for the excess of quotes and the length of this section, but we feel the need to produce a ton of Si evidence, since people usually try to make Sasuke an Ni user. Sasuke’s goal is constantly quoted in flashbacks; it’s the staple of his character. However, notice that the first thing he mentions is not revenge, but rather the restoration of his clan. Sasuke is loyal to his clan. His goals, from killing Itachi to destroying the Leaf Village, are always driven by clan ideals and family honor, typical Si duty driven mentality. Sasuke is anchored in the past, and I’m not just saying that in regards to his desire for vengeance. Any person, Si dom or otherwise, would desire vengeance after suffering a tragedy as he does. However, notice how Sasuke fixates on the past in the quotes above. Adult Sasuke tells Naruto’s son that he needs to understand who Naruto was in the past. Adult Sasuke also frequently expresses regret for the way he was in the past, wanting desperately to atone for his sins. Sasuke even refuses Hashirama’s cells when he loses his arm, opting to live without it as a means of redemption, to atone for his crimes. This theme continues throughout ‘Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.’

Sasuke also demonstrates a reliance on past experiences. He returns to several places from his past, like the cat lady for supplies when he could have easily gone somewhere else. After the final battle with Kaguya, Sasuke challenges Naruto, and where does he take him? Back to the Valley of the End, where him and Naruto first fought. In addition, before leaving on his soul searching journey at the end of Shippuden, Sasuke says goodbye to Sakura, by tapping her on the forehead, like his brother always did to him. These are all completely unnecessary nods to the past that Sasuke feels compelled to do. Later on in the show, Sasuke goes so far as to resurrect the past Hokages to get answers to questions like “What does it mean to be a village?” and “what does it mean to be a shinobi?” Sasuke gets caught on these concepts, unable to use intuition to guide him to an answer and unable to intuitively understand what Itachi was thinking. (If they were both Ni doms, that shouldn’t have been so difficult. At one point, Danzo even notes that Sasuke and Itachi perceive things very differently.) Therefore, Sasuke looks to the past and the experience of others to get answers.  (NOTE: High Ni users usually interpret and fill in the blanks themselves.) When Itachi is resurrected, Sasuke chases him around in attempt to force answers out of him, completely unable to move on from the past, in spite of the great danger the world is now in. Sasuke also has no clear vision for the future, beyond the desire to “cast off the past” and recreate the village in the way it was intended to be originally (as per the Hokage’s definitions), with him as the world ruler. However, realize that everything Sasuke is doing is an attempt to honor and avenge his brother – whether that means to destroy the village or protect the village – which is another nod toward Si.

Sasuke is incredibly detail oriented, and at times gets stuck on small details. Sasuke’s use of the GenJutsu aspect of the Sharingan is very subtle. While Itachi creates grand illusions to trap his prey (like any good Ni user would), Sasuke hones in on small details, relying on keen observation to gain the upper hand. For instance, when he fights Danzo, Sasuke uses GenJutsu to make it look like the last Sharingan on Danzo’s arm is still open, making him think he has one more use of the Izanagi. Sasuke uses this small detail, rather than a grand illusion to ultimately defeat Danzo. This pattern remains consistent throughout the show. In addition, Sasuke primarily uses the the Sharingan to copy other people’s Ninjutsu, which would be a logical Si tactic (repeat what he has seen in the past). In general, Sasuke, while very strategic, has a relatively linear way of thinking. The show usually doesn’t need to enter his headspace and narrate his thinking or tactics, like they do with some of the other characters like Neji and Madara. Sasuke is also very straight forward and direct in all of his dealings, and isn’t often seen attempting to subtly manipulate others. Additionally, Sasuke feels the need to correct Deidara mid-conversation and say that “by the way, my jutsu is technically called Chidori” which is a potential example of Si, getting caught on an unnecessary detail or technicality. He’s also shown breaking down his entire strategy, hypothesis, and observations to Deidara at the end of their battle in detail, explaining to Deidara exactly how he had just lost. This is another nod toward Si: his ability to look back and explain every step he’d taken to defeat Deidara. All of it was observation based, rather than being based on intuition, gut, or instincts.

Ne:

Sasuke’s Ne helps with improvising in the moment and being resourceful. On occasion, he has to come up with creative ways to defeat his enemies, and Ne comes to his aid. Sasuke adapts several jutsu to meet his needs, and gathers a large arsenal of techniques to use in battle. Sasuke is also relatively adaptable, although his low Ne use is clearly shown after he kills Itachi and learns the truth about what happened. Sasuke is thrown into a state of confusion, and starts flip flopping between goals. He doesn’t know if he should destroy the village to avenge his brother or become Hokage to fix the village. Later, he wants to wipe out all of the Hokage to fix the entire world. For this period of time, when he first learns the truth, Sasuke no longer seems purposeful and controlled, but irrational and chaotic, as he tries to decide what goal he should latch onto next. He then later, based on the experiences and knowledge of the previous Hokage, declares that he will become Hokage, which, being a complete 180 degree turn from his original intent, throws everyone into shock. Sasuke’s low Ne also causes him to get frustrated with those who fail to maintain focus, or deviate from the task at hand in any way.

Fi:

“You toy with people’s lives for the sake of this vain and ridiculous cause of yours. You disgust me!”

For the majority of Shippuden, Sasuke holds a relatively consistent moral code, which he maintains in spite of anyone else’s opinion. While training with Orochimaru, Sasuke refuses to kill anyone, even when confronted by a large group of warriors. He defeats them without killing a single one. Orochimaru is quick to remind him that it would have been much simpler just to kill them, but Sasuke refuses to participate in pointless killing. Sasuke considers Orochimaru to be a piece of trash because of his lack of morality, because he has no regard for human life. Sasuke also views Naruto as weak throughout Shippuden and the original series, and hates him for this weakness. This is a symptom of inferior Fi. By the end of Shippuden, Sasuke’s dominant Te unfortunately tramples out his inferior Fi code causing Sasuke to lose himself in his goal. He desires to kill Naruto, kill all of the Kage, and rule the world himself. He’s willing to sacrifice anyone who gets in the way, and puts the entire world (currently trapped in the Infinite Tsukuyomi) at risk.
