Si:

“A ninja always keeps an eye on the weather. Now do you see how important it is to be ready to take precautions before any trouble starts?”

“I did it because I wanted to see if I could change.”

“You’re too hung up on each individual jutsu. Focus on your accuracy. It makes no sense to do one well if the overall flow is poor!” – Neji to Hinata

Hinata Hyuga from the Naruto series is quiet and cautious. From the time she is a child, the girl is very timid, making her introversion clear. She struggles to get out of her shell, and we also see that a big struggle of hers is fearing that she will never change, which can potentially be rooted in Si. Her sole purpose for agreeing to take the Chunin exams is to see if change is possible for her. As she’s portrayed more and more, Hinata’s cautious and planning nature begins to surface. When temporarily put in charge of a team of children from the academy, Hinata is shown emphasizing keeping an eye out for trouble and being prepared for it. We also see her setting traps while on missions in preparation for an attack. In addition, she’s one of the ninja that is quick to point out when a situation may be dangerous. Of course, Hinata is not in any way rebellious, and adheres to the rules of her clan and the village without complaint, in spite of all the reasons she had for possibly being bitter. Hinata also tends to speak in concrete, straightforward terms, rather than the abstract, symbolic way that we see from most Ni users in this series. Lastly, while training with Neji, Hinata is specifically rebuked for getting stuck on each individual jutsu or action, rather than maintaining a good overall flow. This demonstrates the contrast between Si detail orientation and the Ni big picture focus.

Fe:

“You’re too kind and gentle. You seek harmony and avoid conflict. You allow yourself to be easily swayed by others. Admit it. You have no confidence. You feel inferior to everyone else here.” – Neji about Hinata

“Everyone, let’s join together and fight as one!”

Hinata is very sensitive to the emotions of others. She’s polite, respectful, warm, supportive, compassionate, encouraging, and caring. One of her biggest struggles throughout the series, beyond her timidness, is her overly kind and gentle nature. While that’s obviously a strength in many situations, it’s also the reason why Neji is chosen to lead the Hyuga during the Great Ninja War rather than Hinata. The clan viewed it as a weakness. Another big struggle is her lack of personal identity, or Fi. She bases her worth off of others, and ergo, gets beat down emotionally during her early childhood. Hinata emphasizes harmony and pulling together as a team, which is shown clearly in the war. As a young Genin and during her time on Team 8, she expresses a clear distaste for any kind of conflict among her team members, or anyone else she is working with. Hinata is also quick to apologize whenever she says or does something that provokes a negative reaction from others, which demonstrates her Fe awareness.

Ti:

“The one we’re supposed to protect is always protecting us. I’m so useless.”

Hinata is highly critical of her past mistakes and personal capabilities. This is due to a combination of Si and Ti. She struggles with seeing herself as useless and weak, similar to Sakura. A large part of this inferiority complex is due to her being deemed a failure by her clan, and usurped by her sister, Hanabi. She also compares herself to Neji, and sees him as superior to herself. Ultimately, Naruto is the one who unwittingly encourages her, and helps her break out of this highly self-critical Si-Ti cycle, allowing her to change herself into a strong and capable shinobi.

Ne:

Hinata’s inferior Ne comes out primarily in her tendency to worry a lot. When working on a team with Naruto and Kiba, she’s shown worrying too much about that. She’s also shown over-thinking her actions whenever Naruto approaches, rendering her incapable of doing anything at all. She just freezes, blushes, and acts mute. Of course, her cautious Si dominant nature goes hand in hand with inferior Ne, since inferior Ne’s fear of unknown possibilities is what provokes Si caution.
