Naruto Series: Sasori (INTJ)
Ni:
“The spider needs to be as fast as the fly.”
“What’s the point of asking questions when you’re about to die?”
“I wouldn’t have thought it possible. We’re being followed.”
“This is starting to get messy. Guess I better play my next hand.”
Sasori has plans within plans within plans. He is highly confident in his planning ability, and naturally thinks ahead. Hidden strategies are his thing. His cautious nature (the sign of a introverted perceiving dominant) has resulted in him producing methods to eliminate every weakness he can think of. He hides himself within a puppet because a puppeteers weakness is close combat, has turned his own body into a puppet, has poison tipped all of his weapons, has multiple gas stores within his main puppet (Hiruko), has hundreds of puppets he can summon, and etc. In addition, his strategies rely heavily on trickery and subterfuge. When an enemy thinks they have defeated him, they learn that there’s yet another layer to his strategy (destroying Hiruko reveals his own puppet body, destroying that reveals that he can jump bodies…) He uses memory wipe techniques to gain control of people and manipulate them into doing his bidding, some examples being Kabuto and a sand Shinobi. In addition, Sasori prefers to stay focused on the mission at hand and hates any delays or distractions, which suggests low to no Ne. He doesn’t understand things that have no apparent purpose or point, which suggests Ni/Se. Sasori is also shown occasionally using metaphors, and arguing with Deidara over the true meaning of art.
Te:
“Deidara, quit gawking and get out of here. You’re in the way.”
“Have I mentioned how much I dislike making people wait? It’s against my policy.”
“Yes, perhaps next time you’ll listen to me.”
“Why of course it is. I had plenty of time to see to it. Unlike you, I know what I’m doing.”
Sasori is quick to tell Deidara what to do, whether it be hurry up, go away, or etcetera, which is typical Te attempting to control its physical environment. Sasori is shown yelling at Deidara for not listening to him, for being unprepared, for causing delays, and etc. Anytime he is kept waiting, Sasori complains about it to the point where he’s known by many for hating to be kept waiting. Sasori is quick to make harsh judgments and belittle others. This is not only clearly demonstrated in his relationship with Deidara, but also in his fight with Sakura and Granny Chiyo. He goads and belittles her, making himself sound overly confident. He appears to possess the stereotypical arrogant attitude of an INTJ. Sasori is goal oriented, always working toward the completion of their current mission. Any delays or deviations from the task at hand, frustrate him and provokes a snide remark.
Fi:
“I can’t believe these people would choose death to save someone else’s life. They’re so stupid.”
“Nonsense. Eternal beauty is what constitutes real art.”
Sasori keeps his emotions to himself, and his values remain mostly hidden. He scoffs on rare occasion at the ideals of others, unable to understand why someone might value the life of another over themselves. Bad Fi can often come across as highly selfish in nature. While Sasori’s values leak out occasionally (like the true meaning of art), he is most certainly not blindly following any ideals like a high Fi user might. For example, while he is loyal to the Akatsuki, he does essentially betray them by giving Sakura and Granny Chiyo a reward for defeating him: the location and details of his meeting with Orochimaru.
Se:
Sasori demonstrates clear inferior Se. For starters, he is highly detached from the physical world, to the point where he has turned his own body into a puppet. He is also quick to manipulate others or his puppets to do his bidding, using himself as a last resort. In addition, while he could have easily killed Kankuro, he chooses to leave him to die by poison, which would take a full three days. This is a typical inferior Se weakness, failing to take matters into one’s own hands and see events through to completion. Lastly, he is shown lashing out suddenly in anger. While he is typically rigid and controlled, Sasori is shown taking a sudden swipe at Deidara with his puppet’s tail due extreme frustration over Deidara arriving late.

This is probably one of your best typings. Use to think that Sasori was an ISTP but you completely changed my mind. Is lashing out in sudden anger and extreme reactions always indicative of inferior Se? I suppose further adding himself to that inferior Se part of him turning himself into a puppet, it is almost like he is projecting his Ni-Fi abstract ideals onto every part of himself + sensory reality- to prove the idea that true beauty is one that last forever. He embraced the symbolism of dying in the embrace of his ‘parents’.
Thank you! To be honest, I wasn’t sure anyone would actually be interested in this one, but I decided to go ahead and post it anyway.
SO, this is where STPs and NTJs start to look similar so I’m not at all surprised that he’s been mistaken for an ISTP. Inferior Fe causes a sudden emotional lashing out, which combined with the Se in the ISTPs produces a similar physically angry reaction. But the ISTP will be more “physical” as a whole, so it’ll be the emotional part that’ll be more shocking, hence inferior Fe. With INTJs, the inferior Se will produce an extreme physical reaction when they’re losing control of a situation (Te). Also, in spite of the fact that Sasori was lashing out in anger, I don’t recall him ever seeming extremely angry, in an explosive sense. He just lashed out briefly and then almost immediately returned to calm and controlled again.
“it is almost like he is projecting his Ni-Fi abstract ideals onto every part of himself + sensory reality- to prove the idea that true beauty is one that last forever. He embraced the symbolism of dying in the embrace of his ‘parents’.”
Very true. This is well said.
Of course I would find this page right after suggesting Sasori was an ISTJ on the Neji page. Doh!
I am glad to have found your site; it seems to be a real gem so far. 👍
Thanks. 🙂
