Persona 5 is a roleplaying game with a wide variety of well-developed characters. A few years back, we had a few of these characters get requested for individual analyses. In the process of playing Persona 5 Royal, we decided to write a 16 personalities article for the entire cast, given how many characters there are to work with. We also played Persona 5 Strikers, and will be taking the cast of that game into consideration as well. Of course, that means there are sometimes multiple characters for a given MBTI personality type. However, we only highlight one. The main cast got top priority followed by whichever character provided the best example of their MBTI personality type within the games.

In the article below, links will be provided to any individual analyses we may have written. if you would like to see an individual analysis for anymore of these characters, feel free to ask, and maybe even, buy us a coffee!

The 16 Personality Types Through Persona 5

ESFP – Ryuji Sakamoto

“Heh, and it’s not like people think much of me anyways. I’m gonna dash through this the only way I know how!”

Initially, Ryuji is known for being a troublemaker. He’s aggressive, difficult, and short-tempered. However, as the storyline progresses, Ryuji demonstrates a strong sense of self, morality and justice. He’s quick to act in accordance to what he believes is right, which is why he becomes a Phantom Thief so readily. He’s blunt, straightforward, and action-oriented, always encouraging the team to keep moving forward.

ISFP – Ren Amamiya

“Their actions speak for themselves. They may be criminals in the eyes of adults, but… If they keep to their principles and get the job done… Without a doubt, that would be justice.”

Ren is soft-spoken, deeply caring, adaptable, and loyal. He is driven by his strong desire for justice, which gets him into more trouble than he usually intends. As a teenager, he defends an innocent woman from the advances of a drunk man, and ends up getting convicted of assault unjustly. Later, he seizes the opportunity to start the Phantom Thieves and serve justice to criminals on a much grander scale.

Other Examples: Chihaya Mifune

ENFP – Akira Konoe

“There aren’t any real heroes left. So… why not make our own? The world needs someone willing to fight for its people’s justice. A hero to lead them. To unify them. A hero like me.”

Due to past trauma, Konoe takes up the mantel of hero, believing that it’s his birthright to change the entire world. Recognizing opportunities at hand, he acquires EMMA, and quickly begins deploying a strategy to change hearts, one city as a time. His dream to become a hero draws from his childhood hero, Zephyrman, who inspires the design for his shadow’s battle outfit. Konoe is charismatic, confident, and passionate, truly believing that what he’s doing is the right thing.

INFP – Yusuke Kitagawa

“A breathtaking sight… Imitations they may be, but together, they make a fine spectacle… Though the flowers of evil may bloom, be it known… Abominations are fated to perish!”

Yusuke is an incredibly passionate individual, dedicated wholly to creating authentic and meaningful art. Marching to the beat of his own drum, Yusuke often appears eccentric in the eyes of others. He always remains true to his feelings, and possesses a dramatic flare in the way he acts and speaks. Yusuke frequently waxes poetic and philosophical as he ponders deeper meanings and implications.

Other Examples: Hifumi Togo

ESTP – Suguru Kamoshida

“The people around me were the ones who kept it secret. Adults who want to share in my accomplishments, students who have the drive to become winners… They willingly protect me so that we all may profit from it… There are too many imbeciles who don’t understand that!”

Kamoshida is a villain by opportunity. He sees the means to use his talents to get whatever he wants, from whoever he wants, whenever he wants it, and uses that to his advantage. Kamoshida is not very subtle. Instead, he strategically positions himself in such a way that no one is motivated enough to stop him. He uses aggression and fear to rule his students, while simultaneously presenting himself as an invaluable asset to those in power at the school.

ISTP – Zenkichi Hasegawa

“The only thing the police do is obey orders – even when they involve total injustice or an absence of human logic.”

Zenkichi approaches reality through the lens of logic and cynicism, which is why he freaks out when experiencing the Metaverse for the first time. It doesn’t make sense and shouldn’t be there. As he works with the Phantom Thieves, Zenkichi offers a grounded perspective, warning them not to be too idealistic or naive. He’s calm, level-headed, and genuinely bothered when one’s tone doesn’t match up to the words they’re saying.

Other Examples: Munehisa Iwai, Tae Takemi

ENTP – Futaba Sakura

“My whole world is expanding. Every day brings new and different discoveries. The direction of Sojiro’s cowlick, the atmosphere of Yongen, the various types of coffee beans… Things might be the exact same as they were yesterday, but from my perspective, it’s all spinning.”

While trauma made Futaba a hermit, the moment she’s free, Futaba pushes herself to explore the world and defeat her fears. She quickly grows more confident, and becomes very vocal within the group. She’s naturally good at coming up with ideas, and the team can always count on her ingenuity. Futaba is generally very excitable, expressive, and spunky, which makes for many amusing interactions with her fellow Phantom Thieves.

INTP – Justine

“I have no intention of abandoning my duty… but I would like to know the truth of this situation. After all, we possess a mysterious list, which seems to have foretold the current state of affairs. Who wrote it? Why do I recognize the penmanship? Why does observing growth feel nostalgic? And beyond that… what was the true intent of its creator?”

Justine is analytical and rational. She’s not one to lose her temper or react in any extreme fashion, but she can certainly be offensive and condescending. Throughout her interactions with the protagonist, she demonstrates a tendency to be speculative, theoretical, and somewhat of a perfectionist. Justine is the first to question her and Caroline’s purpose, and struggles to make sense of the task list’s existence.

Other Examples: Kuon Ichinose

ESFJ – Ann Takamaki

“I’ve been telling myself this is all for Shiho’s sake… I can’t take it anymore… I had enough of this… I hate him! But still… Shiho’s my best friend. She’s all I have left at that sorry excuse of a school! Tell me… What should I do?”

Ann typically does things with other people in mind, and struggles to find her own personal vision. She’s empathetic and kind, desiring to be a ray of light for people everywhere. However, Ann views herself as having a weak heart, and leans on others to help strengthen it, as well as to double-check her thoughts. Among the Phantom Thieves, Ann values teamwork, unity, and caution. She’s often prone to worrying about uncertain outcomes.

Other Examples: Sadayo Kawakami

ISFJ – Yuuki Mishima

“This is all your fault. Before you came along, I knew my role in life… I had accepted that I was a zero, embraced it even… I want to change society, too. I want the world to notice me!”

Mishima feels boring and invisible. Believing in the Phantom Thieves’ cause, he takes it upon himself to become their strategic image management rep. Using his strong marketing skills and propensity for research, Mishima builds a successful fan site, which helps them gain popularity. However, he struggles with always being in the background, and secretly hopes he’ll become famous in the process of making them famous.

Other Examples: Sumire Yoshizawa

ENFJ – Toranosuke Yoshida

“You must’ve experienced cruelty and injustice in this life. I can tell by the look in your eyes. That’s why I sense your desire to help the weak.”

Yoshida desires to enact positive change within society. He sees speech as his only weapon, using his voice and his words to win people over. Yoshida presents himself as empathetic, caring, and relatable to the average citizen. He has a natural ability to understand others, and shares insights about the Phantom Thieves with the protagonist (prior to knowing who he is). Yoshida aspires to support others as they pursue their own goals and desires.

INFJ – Haru Okumura

“Soil is quite a mysterious thing. Within its gentle care, even a tiny seed can awaken, spread its roots, and grow up towards the sun. It’s almost like a mother. …Perhaps that aspect is why I find this place so comforting.”

Haru is extremely polite, and focuses on the well-being of others first. She’s capable of asserting herself for the sake of others, but struggles to do so for the sake of herself. (Because of her, Morgana admits his true feelings, and reunites with the Phantom Thieves.) Haru is idealistic and wants to be a hero. In addition, she can be quite insightful and abstract, in spite of her struggle to express herself using words. (Haru is the one to recognize the meaning of Shido’s palace.)

Other Examples: Takuto Maruki

ESTJ – Morgana

“For now, the best option is to stay in the defensive… But we won’t make progress at this rate. Let’s try and figure out who the real culprit is somehow, okay?”

Morgana is always taking charge, in spite of not being the official leader of the Phantom Thieves. He prefers to act like he knows what he’s talking about, even when he’s merely guessing. Morgana can be blunt, arrogant, and condescending, especially with Ryuji, who he views as reckless and stupid. Secretly, however, Morgana loves being with his new friends, and simply wants to be acknowledged, but struggles to relay these feelings when it matters.

Other Examples: Goro Akechi

ISTJ – Makoto Niijima

“However, after considering all the facts, I concluded there are no errors in their acts or principles. Thus, upon deeming them to be on the side of justice, I have decided to end my investigation.”

Makoto is cautious and reserved, preferring to never walk into any situation blind. By default, she strives to live up to the expectations of others, making her the perfect student. However, she eventually realizes the need to form her own dreams and ideals. With the Phantom Thieves, Makoto demonstrates a natural ability to make detailed observations, analyze data, and form effective strategies. As a result, she becomes the brain of their operation.

Other Examples: Sojiro Sakura

ENTJ – Sae Niijima

“Use any means necessary to win. That’s how I would deal with them.”

Sae is ambitious to a fault. Having had responsibility thrust on her early, Sae determines to be successful, no matter what it takes. As a result, she begins sidestepping rules, ignoring protocol, twisting justice, and downplaying values such as honor. Being both intelligent and intuitive, Sae makes many accurate assumptions about the Phantom Thieves, based on the data, as she attempts to fill in the blanks about how they do what they do.

Other Examples: Caroline

INTJ – Masayoshi Shido

“Sacrifices are inevitable in the path of reform. I only require that the foolish entrust themselves to their superiors. I shall guide them.”

Shido has a vision for a future, and everything else must be discarded in favor of it. He views himself as the savior of the world, but he only values himself and those who are willing to be obedient to him. He views everyone as incompentent fools relative to him, and has no qualms putting down anyone who gets in his way. In fact, Shido is very careful on his path to victory, eliminating every potential threat as early as possible to ensure his success.
