There is a pretty prominent split between the Day and Night versions of Escanor’s type. As such we will be giving him a duel typing with a Night and Day section under each section. Because there was more evidence for his night form we are going to lead with that function stack and order. Even though his personality changes his four top functions do look to remain the same. His night form looks to be an INFP with his day form being an ESTJ.

Night Form: INFP

Fi:

“But this will be my final task as a tavern owner. I’m a man of my word and must keep my promise no matter what.”

“Forgive me for being born.”

“I wouldn’t be so arrogant as to presume what your true feelings might be, Captain. However, as someone who’s also been inflicted by a curse, I do understand that pain if nothing else.”

Escanor is an Fi dominant, in spite of possessing certain characteristics that one might assume to be Fe in nature. For instance, Escanor is meek and polite to the extent that he is not very assertive in his night form, allowing people to walk all over him. However, in spite of this, he readily expresses his own individuality in spite of the lack of interest from others. An example can be seen in situations where he rattles off poetry time and time again, even though no one appears interested; and he’s primarily ignored. This is an example of Fi expressing their identity, and refusing to hide it in spite of everyone else around them.

Escanor also has a strong sense of duty, feeling a personal responsibility to carry out whatever task is entrusted to him, the obvious example being how critical he found it to finish delivering the alcohol. Of course, he drew this responsibility back to a value: him being a man of his word. Escanor is concerned about others and very loyal. He tries to refuse joining Gloxinia and Drole’s tournament due an extreme distaste for having to fight any of his friends. He also empathizes with Meliodas concerning the captain’s curse. Of course, his way of doing so is very Fi in nature, since he verbally relates it back to his personal experience with curses. However, he is considerate of Meliodas’ individuality by readily admitting that he can’t presume to understand exactly what the captain is feeling since he is not him.

Ne:

“Ah my friend, oh noble wrath, though our bodies may be desecrated by awful curses, they can’t damage the beautiful rose blooming in our hearts. Oh my treasured friend, the gallant and noble sin…”

Escanor is poetic and melodramatic. Admittedly, this evidence is somewhat anecdotal, but there isn’t a whole lot to work with when it comes to this character. Regardless, Escanor is constantly writing and reciting poetry, which is an outlet for his Ne. This is shown time and time again. He is very flowery in speech and the way he expresses himself, and of course, his poetry is fraught with metaphorical language. He enjoys sharing these poems with others, especially Merlin, whom he is very fond of. His openly dramatic nature can be tied back to the combination of Fi-Ne. Of course, not all INFPs are like this, but these two functions in combination can easily create this tendency.

Si:

“Please allow me to finish my explanation.”

Escanor’s Si is most easily noticed in the precise wording that he uses to express himself, whether in conversation or poetry. He also feels a need to explain his poetry to others, so that there’s no chance for misunderstanding. For instance, after he rattles off a poem prompted by knowledge of Meliodas’ curse, he starts to explain who the beautiful rose is for both him and Meliodas. He is cut off, and gets extremely disappointed as a result. He then utters a “Please allow me to finish my explanation.”

Te:

“Oh well. I’m told I don’t have much of a presence anyway, so it’s alright.”

Escanor’s general lack of assertiveness is a manifestation of his underdeveloped Fi. Fi dominants who have developed their inferior Te tend to be far more stubborn and assertive of their own individuality. However, Escanor has a tendency to allow people to walk all over him, effectively playing the doormat. This is a direct result of the lack of his Te development. However, he doesn’t completely yield his individuality, which is shown when he verbally expresses his disappointment after being dismissed, or his tendency to return to doing something later, in spite of the past reaction. (For instance, still reciting his poetry in various instances spite of a general lack of interest from others…)

Day Form: ESTJ

Te:

“My mighty attacks can not reach thee? And who decided that? My blazing sun was swallowed up by a speck of darkness? And who decided that? The only one who gets to decide such things is me!”

“Why would I hate someone that’s weaker than me? I only pity them.”

Day Escanor is overly assertive and extremely arrogant. He feels superior to everyone else save maybe Merlin. Between that and the rigid demeanor he puts on, Te dominant is fairly clear. He has no issues asserting himself and using force to get others to do what he desires. While he maintains a very calm demeanor due to his extreme confidence, if his calm requests are ignored or taken lightly, it results in an overwhelming display of power in retaliation.

He is very set in the idea that he is the only one with the right to decide how things are going to be and views others’ decisions as merely things that he allows. From his point of view, he has control over everything, and others are merely living in the reality that he controls.

Si:

There is very little Si evidence for Day time Escanor. The best that we can come up with is to point to the specific language that he likes to use when berating his foes. He also showed a great amount of interest in learning more about Merlin’s past. This desire for more details about her could potentially point to Si.

Ne:

“No wonder it hurt me. I’d expect nothing less from myself!”

There is not a lot of evidence pointing to Escanor’s perceiving axis when he is in day form. Generally speaking, you could point to his mild curiosity about other’s strength as Ne, but that’s anecdotal at best. He tends to let others get hits in instead of just instantly demolishing them, which could potentially be part of his Ne. However, this could easily just tie back to his overconfidence and arrogance. Although, he does seem to keep a certain degree of his flowery language, although it is no where near the same level as his night form (which would make sense as a tertiary rather than auxiliary). He also seems to do a fair bit of self-narrating, which could potentially point back to the Ne/Si axis.

Fi:

“Apologize to me that you were born into my world.”

“Pardon me. I feel sick when I’m looked down at by someone smaller than me.”

Fi for Escanor in day form shows up in the form of a very overinflated ego. He views himself as far superior to anyone and everybody seeing them all as insignificant in comparison to himself. His love from Merlin goes from an idolization of her in his night form to viewing her as the only one perfect enough to be worthy of him in his day form. In spite of all this egocentric bluster, there are hints to it being driven by a bit of an inferiority complex. The evidence for this is brief and passing though, but shows up in some of the interactions he has with Merlin. His constant need to assert his power and superiority, in addition to avoiding displays of weakness of any kind, even when he’s on the point of collapse, points to inferior Fi. Of course, the emphasis on making people atone for their sins is proof of Fi/Te as well.
