Star Wars: Finn (ISFJ)
Si:
โThis was a mistake.โ
โNow you tell me?โ
โI know where the nearest escape pods are.โ
Fin is on the cautious side. While he is a trained soldier, heโs not interested in battle, nor is he interested in taking unnecessary risk. This leads to him being worry prone. When Han is taking them to meet Maz Kanata, Finn frequently questions whether or not this mystery person can actually be trusted. He also overly emphasizes his previous lie that heโs important to the Resistance and thus must be protected. Finn also typically knows where all of the escape pods are at any given time, which is shown in multiple cases, on both Resistance and First Order ships. This can also be used as an example of his Si detailed memory. In addition to this, he is shown remembering other places like the main breaker room (when collaborating with Rose). He also tends to explain the technical specifications of the different ships that get mentioned throughout the series, showing that he is taking in and remembering the details of things he has interacted with.
While he adapts to circumstances adequately, Finn does display a visible struggle or frustration in the process, especially when things arenโt going well. When Han informs him that the packages heโs handling are explosives, Finn seems dismayed and exclaims โNow you tell me?โ Finn is frequently seen regretting past actions and is shown fretting over the different circumstances he gets into. He is also overly prone to worrying and is shown telling himself out loud to remain calm throughout the movies. In addition, he is terrible at coming up with lies on the spot. He attempts to use deception as means to maintain his safety and escape the First Order once and for all, but several people see through his lies incredibly easily (like Poe and Han). Along with this, when Han tries to use visual signals like nodding his head in a specific direction to point toward Reyโs location, Finn seems confused, not sure how to read the cue, and Han ends up having to explain out loud. He also appears to be somewhat skittish, being easily frightened by the animals on Canto Bight.
Fe:
Finn struggles to latch onto a personal cause or purpose. Initially in the trilogy, heโs mostly shown following Rey around or trying to save her. He helps the Resistance for a while, but purely because heโs trying to protect Rey. Heโs frequently concerned about her. In the second movie, when the Resistance is in dire straits, Finn tries to flee the ship. He doesnโt want the beacon he is carrying to draw Rey back into danger. He is worried she will end up trapped by the First Order with the rest of the Resistance fleet. In addition, he lies about knowing how to disable the shields of the Star Killer simply so that he can rescue Rey. Itโs not until at least halfway through the trilogy that he begins to adopt a personal connection to their cause. However, the main point to draw from this paragraph is that Finn naturally appears to focus more on others around him rather than drawing upon himself for purpose and direction.
Upon first meeting Rose, Finns revels in her admiration of him. When Rose has to give up her medallion, Finn gets angry for Rose and demands that the medallion be given back, empathizing with the fact that it means a lot to her. This can also be seen as an Si-Fe combination, since those two functions combined seem especially prone to sentimentality. In the third movie, when Finn and Poe initially reunite, they get into a flurried conversation. In this conversation, Finn stops mid-sentence, cutting himself off, in order to thank Poe for acknowledging him and stating that he needs his help to command. This is a good example of Fe needing to be socially polite and appropriate, and thus completely putting their own actions on pause in order to do so.
Ti:
Finnโs tertiary Ti is mostly shown in the way he tends to reason out loud, which is also partially due to his Si/Ne. Note that his Ti is not shown by the fact that he reasons out loud, but rather that we can observe how he strings his logic together and comes to realizations. He has a tendency to realize things mid-sentence, as he verbally rationalizes whatโs going on around him. This is shown during times where he asks a question and then essentially answers the question himself as it clicks to him whatโs going on. Examples of this can be seen when heโs asking why DJ is ransacking his own ship and then realizes itโs not DJโs ship, or when Han is trying to nod him towards Rey and he feels itโs illogical until he realizes its significance. In addition, Finn is prone to displaying open uncertainty and hesitancy, which for him is a manifestation of his Si-Ti combination.
Ne:
โStop enjoying this! Stop enjoying this!โ
Finnโs inferior Ne is shown primarily by his complaints and the way he struggles in the middle of action. As we mentioned earlier, he is a trained soldier, so he does handle it adequately. However, he most certainly doesnโt thrive amidst the chaos. A good example of his inferior Ne can be seen when he and Rose escape on the wild animals during their visit to Canto Bight. He is clearly uncomfortable and yells out in a panicked fashion, telling her to stop enjoying the wild ride. Other hints of his Ne can be seen in the minor puns he makes such as calling Captain Phasma โchrome domeโ due to her shiny armor.

A bit unrelated but this article really helped me solidify the functions that I personally use, especially how Ti can manifest as realizing things mid-way through questioning them. The part about Fe struggling to find personal reasons for doing something really resonalted as well. Honestly I relate quite a bit to all the points you made about FInn, enough to make me wonder if I might be an ISFJ myself. If itโs alright to ask, if you were tasked with differentiating between an ISFJ and a down-to-earth, somewhat anxious INTP what are the key differences that you would look out for?
I know that inn theory it should not be very difficult to differentiate the two but I feel like an odd mishmash of the functions that can relate to both descriptions. Iโd really appreciate some help.
Well, the weakness for the INTP is going to be relationships. Theyโll probably specifically stress out over inadequacy in dealing with people. Theyโll overthink appropriate responses, social protocol, and etc. They tend to struggle with expressiveness, displays of warmth, and etc.
The ISFJ weaknesses are going to be more around spontaneity. Theyโll want to prepare for things in advance, and stress out if being pressured to act in the moment. Theyโll be prone to catastrophizing when stressed out, although an INTP may do this as well.
From a strengths standpoint, an ISFJ is going to be more cautious, consistent, routined, and careful. An INTP is going to desire routine, but will tend to only achieve in small areas of his lifeโฆ An INTP will be much quicker to openly speculate about random things. An ISFJ will probably do this way less and only around a very small, intimate circle of people.
Hope this helps!
Later Edit: Actually, you may find these helpful. Different auxiliary functions, but should generally apply.
Inferior Ne from the Mind of an ISTJ
Inferior Fe from the Mind of an ISTP
That was actually really helpful, thank you!!
I went over the 2 articles and I definitely relate to inferior Fe more.
One last question: Is it possible for Si to be more prevalent in an INTP than Ne without them being in a loop?
Great! Well. I would say that if the Si is slightly stronger than the Ne in an INTP, than they are probably a bit imbalanced, since we need healthy extroverted functions to balance out our introverted ones to be effective in life. It may not necessarily be severe enough to call a loop, but Iโd honestly want to observe that before making a judgement call on it. In a perfect world, weโd have equal use of all 4 functions in our stack.
That makes sense. Regarding the looping thing, I donโt think Iโm in a Ti-Si loop, but my Ne is definitely not as prevalent as other examples of fictional and real INTPs Iโve seen. I was diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder by a psychiatrist. Do you think that could be whats leading to a warped manifestation of my type?
Definitely. Medication can also be a factor if youโre on anti-depressants.
Yeah definitely.
Well Iโll do more research into this. This was really helpful. Thank you.
Interesting, I usually see him typed as an ENFP.
Yeah, we noticed that as well, but we struggled to see him as an extroverted perceiving dominant.
