Kara no Kyoukai: Azaka Kokutou (ENFP)
Ne:
Azaka is lively and energetic. She is frequently shown rushing around, yelling, and barging into rooms without warning. She’s over eager to talk, and doesn’t have an issue interrupting others. She has an all around bold and animated personality. Of course, all this could be indicative of Se dominance as well. Azaka wasn’t a very well developed character, however, there were a few things that indicated Ne > Se to us. Firstly, when confronting Ouji, rather than launching straight into action, Azaka initially begins openly speculating in front of her about what has happened and what her plan was. Of course, Azaka is never afraid to ask questions, whether they be about Shiki’s gender, why her brother wouldn’t cry, and etc.
Additionally, when Shiki wakes her up outside, Azaka initially freaks out and tries to punch her, in process managing to not only miss Shiki entirely but also fall back and hit her head on the fountain. The chaotic flailing and overall clumsy attempt to react in the moment was reminiscent of an Ne user not being in tune with their physical environment. Azaka has also shown moments where she was oblivious to her own actions. One day, she comes bursting into Touko’s office, talking and interrupting everyone. Someone makes a sarcastic crack along the lines of “burst in, why don’t you?” clearly referring to what she had just done. However, Azaka misses the point entirely, and responds by stating that she wouldn’t want to do something a loser would do.
Fi:
“This is a story about such an admirable girl: Me.”
Azaka’s Fi was very clear. She loves her brother despite the societal taboo, and is not at all ashamed about this fact. She has determined that being in love with a close relative is a good thing, and nothing will dissuade her of this belief. She is also very self-centered and hates being ignored. When she visits her family on New Years only to discover that Mikiya isn’t coming, Azaka immediately storms off and heads back to school, demonstrating a clear lack of Fe.
Azaka doesn’t try to hide her emotions. She has an open disdain for Shiki, due to their shared love interest, and never bothers to pretend otherwise. Azaka also makes dramatic statements such as “It was a dream from a distant day I should never remember”, which sounds like the type of statement an Ne+Fi user would make. She generally appears to be in touch with her own emotions.
Te:
“I don’t know who this magus is, but I’m gonna beat him silly. I won’t even forgive him if he apologizes or cries!”
Azaka has a bluntness that is characteristic of Te users. She doesn’t struggle to state her opinions, and they can come off rather harsh. For instance, she openly states that it was a shame that she hadn’t gotten a chance to see Shiki when she was weak and helpless. Azaka also has no problems ordering Mikiya to go out with her, claiming that he owes her. She doesn’t ask, or coerce… She orders. Azaka is also incredibly impatient when an order she gives is not immediately carried out.
Si:
“I’m going to explain myself so there won’t be any misunderstandings.”
Azaka has a tendency to over explain, and share more context than necessary. Once again, she’s not an incredibly well developed character, but you see this tendency in her opening narrative (quote above). You can also see it when she and Shiki run across her roommate’s dog outside. When Shiki asks about the dog, Azaka, rather than simply answering the question, starts explaining how it was her roommate’s dog that someone else was watching because the roommate was gone visiting family, and etc. It could also be suggested that the fact that Azaka is unable to move past her brother, and can only ever find herself attracted to people who look exactly like him, is due to inferior Si.

It’s interesting to me that you guys feel that a number of these characters (Like Asagami Fujino) are underdeveloped, at least for the purposes of typing.
Still, I appreciate the effort you’ve put in, and definitely agree with all the KnK Typing’s so far. 👍
ENFP for Azaka is intriguing, as she doesn’t have the obvious Ne-dom wackiness of an Okabe type, but your reasoning makes sense. I could also see ESFP though, as she angrily throws the book at Mikiya in movie 5 and does that ridiculously athletic run over the chapel benches in 6. Not to mention she goes to wrestle the kitchen knife away from Shiki with her “massive strength” in 6.
Dang it, now I’m leaning more toward Se-dom. 🤦♂️
Regardless though, I feel like I’m learning useful character-writing tidbits thanks to these KnK articles, so thanks for that. 🙏😁
We’re not trying to knock the show when we say that so I hope you don’t take it that way. (I basically threw it in there as a disclaimer.) It’s not that they’re bad characters; they just don’t get very much attention. I believe the majority of the movies were only an hour or less, and then from there, the majority of the screen time was yielded to the main three. Plus, the series as a whole moves at a somewhat slow pace, so it’s not jam packed with information.
Not all ENFPs have that highly dramatized wackiness, like Okabe, but Azaka could easily be an ESFP. What was shown of her kinda puts her somewhat in that middle ground, where you could reasonably spin the character either way. I personally really latch onto a specific character typing when I see a really solid “negative” example of their inferior function, but I don’t think Azaka was really given the opportunity to display that in the series.
For sure, I understand completely.
