One Piece: Kuzan [Aokiji] (ISTP)

I know about a million people are going to disagree with me here. I originally gut typed this guy as an INTP, like nearly everyone else does, but the more I paid attention, the less that made sense. I don’t really see the Ne, which means something for a show with Ne bleed everywhere.

Ti:

“The concept of “absolute justice” can sometimes drive a man to madness.”

“Well, um… What can I say? You’re still a fledgling and not ready yet.”

“I won’t criticize your sense of justice. There are as many rights and wrongs as there are viewpoints in the world. However, if you insist on getting in our way, I can’t sit back and do nothing.”

Aokiji has pretty obvious Ti. He’s apathetic, and seemingly emotionless. While he has beliefs as all people do, Aokiji doesn’t appear to be guided by ideals. When confirming the whereabouts of Nico Robin, he seems unconcerned with the presence of the Straw Hat pirates, and doesn’t feel compelled to arrest them. (Although, he contemplates killing them shortly thereafter, demonstrating classic Ti waffling and a general lack of Te decisiveness.) Sanji even makes a crack about him being “one tall piece of apathy.” Aokiji doesn’t see the world as black and white, nor absolute. He recognizes the existence of various viewpoints and only steps in to fight back when one specifically gets in his way (or duty demands it). Aokiji states his opinions plainly, unconcerned about the feelings of others. He’s also not afraid to break the rules when he is in disagreement with them. He’s not afraid to do what needs to be done, even if that means freezing his own friend, Saul. In casual speech, Aokiji frequently uses hesitant terminology and qualifiers, which also suggests a dominant Ti user.

Se:

“The motto I’ve always lived by as a Marine is Total Slovenly Justice.”

“Don’t bother. The force that we command with a Buster Call is as powerful as an entire nation’s military. And yet, look at the state of our fleet. Look at Enies Lobby, burning to the ground. The situation is obvious isn’t it? The day is lost, men. We’ve been utterly defeated.”

“It’d be a pain to ride to headquarters on my bike. It’s fine. I’ll stay out of the way.”

Aokiji is a clear perceiver. He’s very laid back and casual, hence his motto. He tends to come across as lazy. However, he often travels the seas with only a bike and his ice abilities. He does on occasion declare biking somewhere to be a bother, and is shown asking Garp to give him a ride back. In Aokiji, we can see the napping tendency that One Piece likes to give many high Se users or perceivers in general. He’s shown taking naps at random times, whether in front of the Straw Hat crew, in the middle of a conversation, or on board a ship that’s about to go into battle. (Of course, he seems completely unconcerned with the possibility of danger.) Aokiji is generally prone to action, going so far as to fight Akainu for the position of fleet admiral in a battle to the death. Later, unable to accept his leadership, Aokiji leaves the marines altogether, displaying classic STP rebel tendencies. Lastly, it’s worth noting that when he receives a call from the Marines at Enies Lobby asking if they should pursue the Straw Hats in spite of the failed Buster Call, Aokiji doesn’t speculate about what might happen if they did pursue them; he simply points out the current state of the fleet, tells them that the situation is obvious, and that they should give up. This suggest Se over Ne.

Ni:

“Let me give you a piece of advice. Keep a close eye on Nico Robin. Eventually, she’ll grow to be more than you can handle. The nature of the violent fate she was born into will be a greater danger than you can imagine. More of a burden than you could ever hope to bear. That’s what it means to have that woman as part of your crew.”

“How should I put this? I’ve fought outlaws for most of my life, but thinking about how you’ll turn out scares the **** out of me.”

“As well as… uh… uhh… Oh, never mind… Something to do with Smoker. See ya.”

“Well… That makes you one of those, uh-uh those you know.”

Aokiji concerns himself with fate and what he views as inevitable. He sees the theme of Nico Robin’s life and sees no possibility that she could ever change. He also warns the Straw Hats that she has been born into a violent fate. Also, when he confronts the Straw Hats early on in the show, he expresses a fear of how they will turn out in the future due to the circumstances of their initial bounty, the daring actions they have taken, and the speed of their progress. He’s also shown using some mildly symbolic language, which can be attributed to Ni. In addition, he struggles with verbalizing his thoughts, which is a common Ti-Ni problem. He’s frequently shown failing to put words to what he’s thinking, resulting in him basically stuttering. He then resorts to unspecific or vague words like “watchamacallit” in an attempt to explain himself. Although, he frequently just gives up and walks off, or moves on, which is standard ISTP behavior.

Fe:

“If it’s for the good of the world, it has to be done.”

Aokiji doesn’t typically display much emotion, being an inferior Fe. When a soldier comes crying to him and apologizing, Aokij just pats the guy on the shoulder, says “it’s fine”, and then walks off, not making a big deal out of it. However, he has shown compassion and sympathy through his actions on multiple occasions, like letting Robin live multiples times. In addition, he has a solid sense of values which is what drives him to do things like let Luffy and his crew go because of their benevolent actions in Alabasta. He eventually leaves the Marines because he disagrees so strongly with Akainu.
