One Piece: Nami (ESFJ)

Fe:

“Everyone is expecting help from you, but you come here and don’t think about doing anything to help those people?”

Nami, while appearing to possess Te bossiness, is actually very emotionally fueled. One can see this clearly in sentimental or emotional situations. She is one of the few crew members to be seen crying during the battle between Usopp and Luffy, and she is quick to want to accept him back. Zoro’s initial demand to only allow Usopp back if he apologizes shocks Nami. In addition, the crew members are periodically shown making cracks about her mood swings, meltdowns, and etcetera. In general, Nami is quick to demonstrate her emotions, whether it be anger, sorrow or fear, and she usually allows them to take the lead. Throughout the show, Nami is shown getting angry with people who fight dirty, use other people as shields, insensitivity, and rudeness, which are all Fe triggers.

Nami has an acute awareness of other people’s emotions, which allows her to manipulate their actions, or respond in an appropriately sensitive way (when she wants to). For instance, when Chopper is going to say goodbye to Dr. Kureha, Nami tells everyone to leave Chopper and Kureha alone because this would be an emotional time for them. When Chopper first gets aboard the ship, Nami is very sensitive toward the reindeer, and gets mad at everyone for goofing off during the ‘sentimental’ moment. During the Skypeia Arc, Usopp mocks Nami for tacking her own sentimental nonsense onto the end of the Noland book. Nami is generally very sentimentality throughout the series, which ties back to being a feeler. When it comes time to give up the Going Merry, Nami, like Usopp and Luffy, is incredibly upset, although her logical side is able to take control relatively quickly as she recognizes the need for something more reliable. While Nami is frequently portrayed as a coward early on in the series, oftentimes she is able to muster up enough courage to fight when her friends are at stake. When it’s merely her own life, she runs.

Si:

“Just one more time and everything will be the same. Everything will come back to me. And I will be free from Arlong. Bellemere-san. Finally, I can laugh with all my heart.”

“There are priests on this island, and everyone knows you’re not suppose to anger god! That’s just common sense!”

“It would be [a good thing] if we knew the layout of this fortress or even had an escape plan. Leave it to Luffy to forget the important stuff.”

Nami enforces practicality, common sense and caution, when necessary. She frequently yells at them all for acting stupid, drawing too much attention, starting unnecessary fights, not being careful enough, being too hasty, and etc. With the Straw Hats, she not only plays role of navigator, but also money manager. All purchases typically run through her. Sanji is even shown asking her for permission to a buy a new refrigerator. She also keeps detailed tallies of how much money she has lent each crew member. When she initially joins up with Luffy, Nami is the first one to suggest that they need supplies, a better ship, and a larger crew. She’s one of the more cautious and concerned crew members, not showing as much excitement as the rest of the Straw Hats whenever their bounties increase. She’s also very detail oriented, which is required to draw all of the charts and maps.

In addition, Nami is holds onto a lot of things from her past, as a result of Fe-Si. She takes a tangerine tree on board the Going Merry in memory of Bell-mere. She later transfers the tree to their new ship, the Thousand Sunny. As another nod to the past, Nami covers over her Arlong pirate tattoo with a tattoo that is a cross between a tangerine and a pinwheel, in honor of both Bell-mere and Genzo. Her love of money is also rooted in her past. Nami grows up poor, and she is shown being upset about this as a child. Then, to add fuel to the fire, Nami strikes a deal with the Arlong pirates to buy her island’s freedom, which further enforces in Nami a need for money. Therefore, Nami holds onto this money-hungry mentality, and displays a constant desire for money and wealth for the entire show. One could suggest that her spending habits suggest Se, however, she typically finds really good deals and doesn’t over-indulge in shopping otherwise. She’s very shrewd and thrifty.

Ne:

“This is bad! I can’t escape like this! Luffy, hurry up and take down Eneru! Wait… what if the ship falls from the sky when Eneru gets defeated? No, if we don’t stop Eneru, the Sky Island will be gone for good! What should I do?! (aloud, to Luffy) What should we do, Luffy? We…”
“Are you insane old man? Suppose the snake starts going wild? You’re going to get us all killed!”

Nami only has tertiary Ne, so she doesn’t possess the wide-eyed wonder of the higher Ne users, like Luffy and Usopp. Instead, she’ll use Ne to suggest possibilities of how a situation may turn out, like in the quote above. Nami is very good at recognizing ways in which she can turn every situation to her advantage. She also uses Ne to brainstorm for potential solutions or reasons why something might be. She’s also constantly asking or wondering why they’re doing something, like when Gondfall is trying to demonstrate the impact dial by having Usopp use it on a barrel. However, Nami always stays on point, and gets frustrated when the other crew members get carried away, take things too far, or miss the point entirely. She is frequently shown yelling at Usopp, Luffy, and the others for this reason. She’s also curious, when not overcome by fear. This is demonstrated on Sky Island, when she takes out the waver by herself and explores the area for a while.

Ti:

Nami’s inferior Ti shows up the strongest during the Skypeia Arc for a couple of different reasons. First, Nami is shown getting incredibly upset when she’s treated like an idiot due to asking about Sky Island. She, unlike Zoro and Luffy, takes the whole incident badly, and then for a while is very sensitive about anything that might be construed as getting mocked or being made fun of, which is an example of inferior Ti. During this time, when any crew member laughs at her, even innocently, Nami gets incredibly angry and flips out. Low Ti users are secretly sensitive about being perceived as a illogical or dumb. Secondly, she’s also shown to be superstitious, another tendency of low Ti users. This shows up once they’re actually on Sky Island.

Nami’s tragic past caused her to rely heavily on her Ti. She’s very skeptical, questions logic, and doesn’t readily believe in things that defy her knowledge, like the new kind of cloud described by Noland’s ancestor, Montblanc Cricket. Luffy also announces that he sees a really large seagull, which she instantly dismisses as impossible, until later when she’s forced to admit he was right. Ti also aids her in manipulation of others, allowing her to take her objective Fe observations, and use them, insensitively, to her advantage.
