One Piece: Vinsmoke Sanji (ESTJ)

Some try to call Sanji a feeler or at the very least give him Fe, primarily due to his weakness for girls. However, in shows like One Piece, authors frequently do things for comedic affect which appears to be the case here. Sanji is way too black and white to be in the Ti/Fe axis.

Te:

“You lose your head, you lose the fight!”
“Just shut up and do what I say!”
“You can’t just settle every single disagreement with violence!” A cook says to Sanji.

Sanji is an obvious Te dominant. He’s bossy, abrasive, and commanding, enforcing his black and white opinions and name-calling where ever he goes. Sanji is completely unafraid of conflict. At the floating restaurant, he’s known for causing problems with the customers. He fearlessly picks a fight with a marine officer, not at all concerned about possible consequences. He gives food to unsavory pirates, in spite of the orders and warnings given by the rest of the staff.  He’s also the one to step in and break up the initial fight between Usopp and Luffy over getting rid of the Going Merry. He orders them to stop before they say something they regret. Sanji, in general, is incredibly stubborn and refuses to be bossed around. He’ll fight whoever disagrees with him, no matter who they are, and he’ll feed anyone who is hungry, regardless of their immoral character or evil reputation. He is not often empathic, or swayed by emotions in others. When Zeff proclaims that Luffy has heart, which is something that the pirates attacking them could never have, Sanji looks shocked by this statement, and he’s generally shocked by Luffy’s passionate and unyielding response to the entire situation. For the most part, Sanji keeps his emotions to himself, other than frustration and anger. On Water 7, him and Zoro are the only ones to remain calm and show no emotion during the fight between Luffy and Usopp. In addition, Sanji is the only one to back Zoro’s insistence that Usopp not be allowed to rejoin the crew without a sincere apology to Luffy. Head over heart.

Si:

“But, if we didn’t pull this off, he’d never leave, that stupid brat.” Zeff says to Luffy about Sanji.
“The vast ocean can be very cruel. It’s awful to not have any food or water. Just awful. I understand starving people more than anyone.”
“I won’t allow anyone aboard this ship to waste food!”

Sanji is driven by his past experiences and Si sentimentality. He refuses to let anyone go hungry or waste food, because of his experience with starvation. It doesn’t matter who the person is, what they have done, or if they have money. If they’re hungry, Sanji feeds them. He’s also quick to explain this to anyone, whether he’s responding to a funny look from someone or simply explaining his actions as he carries them out. He also eats whatever is put in front of him, refusing to let anything go to waste, no matter how terrible it tastes. Sanji also struggles to let go of the past and move forward. When given the offer to join Luffy, he instantly refuses, proclaiming that he can’t leave. His boss, “Red Foot” Zeff, tries to convince him to go, explaining that it would be a great opportunity, but Sanji immediately fights back, both physically and verbally, and even goes so far as to say that he refuses to be fired. He is also willing to die in order to not lose the restaurant that had “saved his life.” He also struggles to let go of the Going Merry, and lists off some of the many things that the ship had carried them through. He’s also quick to look into the past and find a reason to blame Zoro for what happens between Usopp and Luffy.

Ne:

“Say, have you ever heard of the All Blue?”
“This is something.. a painting could never capture.. It’s something my imagination could never have fathomed.. What beauty, what splendor… Absolute beauty..!!”

Sanji is mocked by those from his past for believing in a fairy tale: the All Blue. All seafaring cooks have heard the stories of it, but most believe it doesn’t exist. Sanji is an exception, and dreams of finding it. His eyes light up when he recounts the tale and explains how he will find it one day. Fantastical dreams are characteristic of Ne. He joins up with Luffy in order to pursue this dream. Sanji’s reaction to girls can also be explained here. The moment the Sanji gets around a beautiful lady, he waxes poetic. He also researches all of the devil fruit as a child, even though he doesn’t believe they exist, and dreams of having one particular devil fruit. It’s also pretty clear that cooking is an outlet for his Ne, but it’s obviously not logical to tie any particular skill to a specific cognitive function. However, when he talks about his cooking and lectures on it, he’s incredibly detailed and descriptive which demonstrates Ne/Si.

Fi:

“I’ll never kick a woman, even if I die!”

Sanji does not let emotion control him. (I can’t really call his weakness for women… emotion). He, for the most part, keeps his emotions to himself. When he finally decides to go with Luffy, Sanji tries to leave without saying goodbye. It isn’t until Zeff speaks up that Sanji actually gives a sincere ‘thank you’ and goodbye to Zeff and the crew. He also has a very specific moral code he lives by, with no exceptions. He refuses to hit a woman to the point where he’ll let himself be defeated and risk death. Other crew members have had to show up on scene to save him due to this stance. Sanji also considers feeding the hungry his “sacred moral duty.” He gives food for free to pirates who show up at the Baratie on multiple occasions, despite warnings that the pirates will turn on them once they regain their strength. He demonstrates empathy toward people experiencing something that he personally has experienced.
