Myers-Briggs Types in To Be Hero X

To Be Hero X is a brand new show, with currently only one season. Typically, we resist putting out Myers-Briggs type analyses too early in a series, because there’s often not enough character development. However, we’re trying something new. We’re going to put out our INITIAL IMPRESSIONS of the characters in this series. After the second season of To Be Hero X, we’ll circle back to this article and see if any of the sections can be updated. (We haven’t actually settled on MBTI types for some of these To Be Hero X characters so hopefully there’ll be updates after the second season.) When we do update this page, it’ll be mentioned on our monthly Updates page, so keep an eye on that if you’re interested.
If you’re unfamiliar with To Be Hero X, we recommend giving it a shot. It’s based in a society where people are career heroes (kinda like My Hero Academia), but power is birthed and strengthened based on public trust, which creates an interesting conundrum. In many cases, one’s hero identity becomes their chains, a social image they are forced to maintain in order to continue being a hero. To me, it strikes like a battle between Fi and the dark side of Fe.
Anyways, I’ll go ahead and move on to the MBTI personality analyses of the To Be Hero X characters. I will only be putting type labels in the headers if I’m fairly confident in the character’s type. However, I will share my suspicions in their section even if I don’t give them a header label. Let me know your thoughts and theories in the comments! Remember, these are only our initial impressions, not hard core stances.
The Myers-Briggs Personality Types in To Be Hero X
Spoiler Alert: This article will written with the assumption that everyone reading has seen the entire first season of To Be Hero X. Also, if a character is not listed below, then we either have no opinion on the character or didn’t think they were worth mentioning. You’re welcome to ask in the comments.
Lin Ling [The Commoner] – INFP
“What would I need someone to cheer me on for? I’m a hero.”
Lin Ling probably got the most development out of the characters. He comes across as a fairly typical INFP. He truly believes that anyone can be a hero, even a nobody like him, which he pitches to his boss in the form of a new commercial. His boss is skeptical of his choices for the ad, and berates him, but Lin Ling emphasizes that they have to go with the current trends. Later on, in a flashback, his boss also berates him for mixing his personal preferences into his work. When Lin Ling is forced to assume Nice’s identity, he struggles taking on a persona that is not his own, although he likes the idea of being a hero. Eventually, he faces the deception head on, and breaks free of Nice’s persona. He ultimately forms his own hero identity as The Commoner.
Overall, Lin Ling presents as personable, caring, and compassionate. He demonstrates the rambling tendencies of many NPs, and seems to remember all the details of the ads he made for Moon, which suggests Si. He’s courageous and willing to fight even when he’s inexperienced and the odds seem against him.
Xiao Yueqing [Moon] – ESFP
“My name is Moon. I was an actress, and I was given a chance to go wherever my heart desired. I dreamed of finding a place where no one knew me, and no one would disturb my peace. I didn’t think that would mean a deserted island. To make matters worse, I foolishly left my teleportation device behind. Looks like I’m going to be alone for the rest of my life.”
Moon spends a lot of her screen time frustrated with her situation. She’s been trapped at Nice’s side, playing the role of his girlfriend. She’s unable to have the freedom she once had. When meeting Lin Ling, she initially takes out some of her frustrations out on him, but they eventually bond over a food fight. She encourages him to be himself rather than play the role of Nice. She fights against fulfilling her contract, which gets them locked in the tower together for over a month, during which time she threatens to kill herself a dozen times (although it doesn’t seem believable). Eventually, when she finally gets free of “the girlfriend curse”, she transports herself to an unspecified place where no one knows her and doesn’t think to bring her teleportation gun. This lack of caution and foresight results in her being trapped on a deserted island.
Enlighter/God Eye – INTP
“As expected, people are easily blinded by their own biases. Then allow me to become everyone’s eyes and show all of you reality!”
God Eye is obsessed with discovering the truth and uncovering lies. He tries to catch “Nice” in his deception by asking hyper-specific technical questions, like what the total runtime was for all ads that Moon starred in. During his obsessive studying and analyzing, he quickly forms theories around the information he discovers, some false, but in the process, he does land upon the truth: that Lin Ling is playing Nice. He lures the fake Nice out with a fake kidnapping of Moon (who was supposed to be dead at the time). He doesn’t actually know she was alive. During the fight, he rants about the deceptiveness of heroes, that there were no true heroes anymore, that the public’s blind faith was enabling their farce, and etc. Lin Ling points out his hypocrisy at the end, but God Eye just rationalizes, “Perhaps now you can sympathize with my hatred of fakes.” We were between ENTP and INTP with this character, but ultimately went INTP because when overwhelmed with all the vulnerabilities his power detected in Lin Ling, God Eye freezes up, rather than reacting impulsively.
Miss J – EXTJ
“He’s completely off script. What is that idiot doing?!”
Miss J is all business. She seems unconcerned with Nice’s death beyond the inconvenience of losing her brand. But, she adapts quickly, seeing an opportunity for Lin Ling to replace Nice. She’s generally unsympathetic to other people’s wishes, and forces whatever she wants to happen. She locks Lin Ling and Moon in the Tower together for weeks when Moon fights against fulfilling her contract and marrying Nice. Miss J’s goal is essentially to force them to develop feelings for each other, which does end up being somewhat successful. (This brute force method is very Te.) When Lin Ling proposes a new idea to break up the marriage, Miss J is open to the idea, and comes up with one that she considers even better, to kill Moon, because “a good tragedy would sell even better than your romance.” This idea generation and openness to ideas struck me as a potential tertiary Ne. In later episode in season one, during a flashback, she’s shown defending Nice when he’s struggling to produce a natural smile. She accuses the photographer of giving instructions that were too vague, which could indicate sensor. So, overall, I’m leaning ESTJ, but I haven’t ruled out ENTJ.
Yang Cheng [E-Soul] – ISFP
“But it’s more than my wants. People trust me now. It wouldn’t be right if I just disappeared on them. I can’t stop fighting. If I run away, I’m showing the world that evil wins.”
This character is tricky. We considered an IXFJ type for him, but overall have landed on ISFP for the time being. One of his core characteristics is his self-esteem issues, which makes some things difficult to parse. He’s awkward, indirect, and wrapped up in his own feelings. He’s generally oblivious to the obvious hints that Xia Qing drops, and can never manage to confess his feelings to her because the moment isn’t exactly perfect, which could be Fi idealism. After his friend’s death, Yang Chen ices Xia Qing out, fixating on his revenge mission. The way he isolates himself and goes into work mode looks like Fi with inferior Te grip. Determined never to hesitate again, he becomes impulsive. He recklessly challenges E-Soul to a duel, managing to win mostly because of Rock manipulating things in the background. Yang Cheng also doesn’t appear to be one to offer up details, which is demonstrated in moments like when he shows up to class all muddy and only makes a joke when asked why. In addition, when Rock asks how he can be sure he’ll hit E-Soul, Yang Chen just says, “Yes I will. I have to. There’s no other choice.” He doesn’t offer up an explanation or say anything to suggest he has an actual plan. This all strikes more like an SP type with Ni tunnel vision.
Lucky Cyan – ISFP
“I have to! The truth of this story belongs to me!”
Apparently, popular opinion on Lucky Cyan is INFP, but I can‘t see it. I was actually considering ISFJ, before we finally landed on the ISFP theory. (Apparently, we had accidentally skipped an entire episode of her background story. Not surprisingly, watching that helped a lot.) Lucky Cyan’s theme song “Take Off” was very useful in determining her type, in addition to how it’s introduced. Cyan and her friend orchestrate a dramatic exit, in which she breaks out of her metaphorical chains, introduces her true self, and then flees the orphanage the moment it’s over. The song focuses on fighting for your dreams, going in your own direction, being unafraid of being alone, dismissing what people say, etc. It all seems Fi in nature, being very self-focused. There are other hints of her Fi throughout the series, such as dismissing the idea that some heroes she had been talking with were her friends, and the incident in which she demanded to be the one to go get the recording of the plane crash. Her specific words were, “I have to! The truth of this story belongs to me!” As for Se, Cyan for the most part goes with the flow without asking any questions or acting very concerned, a good example being when Queen randomly calls her up to say they’re going on vacation and when she’s handed her first weapon. Her theme song also focuses on taking action, seeing what she wants to see, moving forward, no time to look back, and fate calling, which strikes more like Se/Ni themes.
Liu Yuwei [Queen] – XXTJ
“I will guide this world toward the order it deserves…I will be the hero who creates order!”
I feel very uncomfortable claiming a solid stance on Queen, although I have a theory. Queen is assertive and goal-oriented. She pursues her ambitions relentlessly, rarely taking time to slow down and take a break. (Cyan and Johnny loosen her up a bit.) She’s curt with most people, and hates having her time wasted. Queen basically acts as if she’s in a rush to realize her ideals, and those ideals are very TJ in nature. She wants to overthrow the current Trust system, and establish a new world order. She believes that “Order frees the hero and binds the villain.” Her power is based around control, boundaries, and rules. Given everything I’ve seen about this character, I’m inclined to lean ENTJ, for a few reasons. I lean Ni over Si because of (1) the talk of the symbolism surrounding X and what he represents, (2) the theme of abolishing the old to establish something brand new, and (3) her intense fixation. To compare, we see Miss J entertaining alternate ideas, while Queen seems to present hers in an absolute way, like she’s already thought it through herself and has no intention of considering anything else. As for why ENTJ over INTJ, every time Queen opens her mouth, her focus is on order: imposing it and being in control. She’s more focused on that then observation, information, and planning. She also struggles to slow down, which can result in a lack of a caution. For instance, she participates in missions until just before the ranking tournament (which shocks Johnny), and ultimately leads to her getting injured and being unable to participate.
Little Johnny – ENFP
“His eyes were filled with an abject sadness in the car. We got deep, like, subterranean!”
Little Johnny is socially extraverted, friendly, and empathetic. He appears to connect with others easily, Queen and Cyan being the most prominent examples in the series. Little Johnny is a talker and rambler. He tries desperately to make a personal connection with Ghostblade, resulting in him trying out multiple potential conversational topics. He directly asks Ghostblade what his trauma is, rather than respecting any kind of social boundaries. Ultimately, Ghostblade deems him to be overly familiar. Johnny reads into everything Ghostblade does and every little expression he makes, ultimately forming a personal connection with Ghostblade that’s completely disconnected from reality. (He deems Ghostblade to be kind and compassionate. Meanwhile, Ghostblade was angry enough to want to kill him.) Johnny’s internal dialogue frequently deviates from reality as well, such as when he’s trying to defend Ghostblade but ends up making everything worse.
Wang Yi [Ghostblade] – INFP
“I would never research a target before a mission. I knew without a doubt that they were in the wrong. Greed is wrong. Weakness is wrong. Violence is wrong. Lying is wrong. Betrayal is wrong. Knowing too much… Wrong again.”
OK, so, you may be a bit flabbergasted by this stance. I would say hear me out, and then launch into a succinct analysis, but I can’t actually fit any form of reasonable analysis for Ghostblade into a condensed paragraph, given the extenuating factors influencing his type manifestation (like the ASD). So, if you want to learn why we type Ghostblade as an INFP, then check out our individual analysis of Ghostblade’s personality type. Comments submitted to this page arguing against our INFP conclusion of Ghostblade will be rejected. Submit your arguments to Ghostblade’s dedicated article.

Luo Li [Loli] – ESFP
“If we sit back and let this happen, he’ll just keep pushing our boundaries… Just like last time, we gotta take a stand! Show him who’s boss!”
Loli is impulsive and action-oriented. She dreams of being a hero, but refuses to change herself in any way. Heroes need to look a certain way for people to trust them, but Loli doesn’t want to give up aspects of her identity, like her pink hair. (“I’m not changing to fit what they want!”) So, in order to still chase her dream of being a hero, she builds herself a pink robot, which keeps it personalized but bypasses the trust issue. Loli is straightforward with others, fiery, and quick to spring into action. She constantly encourages Nuonuo to take a stand against her stalker, and takes it upon herself to help. In the restaurant, Loli jumps up and paints a message on the window in ketchup, and later in the car, she attacks Ghostblade’s vehicle mid-transit, almost causing them both to fall off a cliff. She has a tendency to ignore instructions and just do whatever she feels is right.
Nice – IXFJ
“Can you tell me where the rest of your party is, please? They’ll be in danger soon…I’ll kill them after I kill you.”
Nice’s development was pretty minimal. The only thing I’m fairly certain about with Nice is that he’s an auxiliary Fe user. He’s very polite and seemingly pleasant, even when saying something sinister or threatening. Evil masked behind politeness. However, he lacks the more genuine-seeming warmth of an Fe dominant, hence the IXFJ rather than EXFJ. Smile had to coach him on smiling more convincingly. His persona is also based around being a perfectionist, which is a fairly common theme amongst IXXJs. (Not all IJs have a perfectionist-complex, but they seem the most likely out of all the types, in my experience.)
Smile – EXFJ
“No matter how high you climb, hold tight to your beliefs. I’ve always believed a smile has power.”
Smile possesses a natural warmth that seems genuine. He enjoys smiling at others and seeing them smile back. He claims that this keeps him pretty happy. He states that he was born to smile, and only by smiling can he reach his full potential. Unfortunately, he does get stuck in this persona as a hero, which means that he smiles even when he’s falling apart on the inside. He has a tendency to show up at X’s house unannounced, in a different disguise every time. (He’s only shown doing it once in the show, but it’s stated that it’s happened before.) Smile brings food, and states that he just wants the company. Later, he puts X to bed after he passes out. Given all this, his focus on others (Fe) and the variance in disguises (Ne), I’m inclined to think he’s an ESFJ rather than an ENFJ.
X – INTP
“Think. Who was it that sent those goons to my apartment?”
X was a challenge because of the limited screen time he has gotten thus far. He seems to be fairly laidback, and not incredibly mission-oriented. It takes Smile’s death to really motivate him back into action. When explaining the situation to Ahu, X encourages the dog to think for himself and follow the logic where it leads. X does this instead of stating things directly, which tends to indicate Ti-Ne. He also refuses to join an agency and keeps himself entirely independent and anonymous, which could indicates dominant Ti and inferior Fe’s tendency to remain detached and autonomous. He claims to admire Smile for smiling all the while he’s been a top hero, which could be inferior Fe looking up to dominant Fe. In addition, X is shown enjoying little daily rituals, that he appears to stick to fairly consistently. He also gets somewhat annoyed with Smile for switching up his disguise. These things support Si higher than inferior. Therefore, overall, I think the INTP theory for X makes the most sense given the current information.
Yan Mo [Rock] – INFJ
“People are such interesting creatures. So obsessed with rules they let them govern their existence. Teach them how to play the game and they’ll never stray from their instructions.”
Last I checked, the most popular theory on Rock is INTJ, and Ni dominant makes sense. Rock works in the background, scheming and manipulating. At one point, he states that “Times keep on changing. Gotta keep up with the game if you wanna play.” He’s forward thinking, willing to adapt, and not bound to convention. It’s also clear based on the information in the show that he plans things out long in advance, which aligns with an IJ type. However, watching the character, I think he makes more sense as an Fe user, than a Te user. Rock appears to connect with many of the heroes that he targets, such as E-Soul and Dragon Boy. He forms a familial relationship with Yang Cheng and Xia Qing over a long period of time, to the point where they’re referring to him as “uncle”. He makes himself seem trustworthy. You can also see some Fe behaviors in how he sets up his coffee shop, and creates the perfect spot for someone to confess their love. He also encourages Yang Cheng to confess his love, while simultaneously sabotaging his efforts to do so. When speaking to Zac, Rock also emphasizes that “these grassroots heroes lack etiquette,” which is another Fe value. Overall, I’m fairly comfortable in the theory that Rock is an INFJ.
Shand – INTJ
“We dedicate our lives to the pursuit of justice. But too often, we find the heavy hand of fate tipping its scales. In time, fate exacts a cruel toll on us all. This righteous young man, my son, paid that toll with his life.”
Shand is austere and rigid, with a generally cold demeanor. At his son’s funeral, Shand tells Yang Cheng that he’s not interested in empty platitudes or promises, only action (usually indicates Te or Se). He gives a speech emphasizing the idea of being bound to fate, which tends to be an Ni theme. In addition, Shand treats Nice like a tool that he’s only willing to keep around if Nice remains useful. He constantly threatens to get rid of him, partly using that as a way to motivate him. (Although he’d absolutely get rid of him if Nice failed to step up.) These are all Te tendencies, when used for “evil”. However, he never appears to give Nice any clear instructions, which is more common for those on the Ni/Se axis. He also gets annoyed with Mickey, when Mickey drags him somewhere to talk but takes too long to get to the point. (Ne/Si users tend to be more interested in context, while Ni/Se users want the main point.) So, given his general demeanor, mannerisms, and etc., I’m inclined to think he’s an INTJ.
Mickey
“Fortune always seems to smile upon those who are best prepared.”
I almost didn’t write this character at all, because I’m not entirely comfortable claiming a stance. But I’ll share my thoughts. Mickey emphasizes preparation, patience, and determination. He enjoys exchanging information, and flaunting the fact that he knows more than everyone else. In addition, he seems to enjoy meddling, and pulling strings behind the scenes. He gets almost giddy. He’s also prone to sharing a bunch of context before getting to the point (which annoyed Shand). The emphasis in preparation is extremely common for SJs, and STJs in particular. However, he thinks determination should outweigh skill, which sounds like Te over Si. The sharing of information and meddling with events for fun seems Si/Ne in nature, but not inferior Ne. So, I’m currently leaning ESTJ.
