Myers-Briggs Personality Types in Re:Zero

MBTI and Myers-Briggs related content

Re:Zero has a range of characters, representing a wide range of Myers-Briggs personality types (often referred to as MBTI). It’s possible if we really thought about it, we could come up with a 16 types article. However, we don’t like making a bunch of rough guesses with little supporting evidence, so this article is going to focus on the characters that we’re fairly confident in. When it comes to shows with a lot of characters, it can take a lot of screen time to give each character adequate development to be typed with any degree of certainty. After all, the more spread thin the show is amongst the characters, the less specific development each character gets, and it’s not good practice to rely on tropes and stereotypes.

With that all being said, continue on below to read some brief summaries of the most prominent Re:Zero characters and our theories as to their Myers-Briggs personality types. If you notice that certain characters are missing from this list, it’s because we either couldn’t settle or didn’t feel like there was enough evidence to support our theory. You’re welcome to ask in the comments. Some characters may have links for individual analyses at the bottom of their section, so keep an eye out if you’re interested in delving deeper.

The Myers-Briggs Personality Types in Re:Zero

Subaru Natsuki – ENFPSubaru

“We have to figure out a way to breakthrough Regulus’ invincibility. And my idea is to try out every possibility that I can come up with one by one.”

Subaru Natsuki is a spontaneous, energetic, enthusiastic, and playful individual. Subaru is described as being creative and having a lot of fanciful ideas. This is also what he tends to view as his strength, his go-to way of being useful. When fighting Regulus, his strategy was to try out every possibility he could come up with until something worked. That open-ended, wide-ranging possibility orientation is indicative of Ne. Of course, he has the poetic flare and word-vomiting tendencies that frequently come with high Ne. As for his judging functions, Subaru is feeling-focused. He finds it difficult to remove his emotions from the equation, often using them as his driving force. He states this very plainly when asked why he’s taking Rem to the Pleiades Watchtower. At a different point in the series, he explains that feelings hold power, that they aren’t just weakness. Subaru is also incredibly authentic to the point of embarrassing himself, and even describes himself as selfish, which is an indication of Fi reasoning. (FPs are more likely to frame their motivations as selfish because they’re consciously using their personal motivations as a driving force. In other words, they’re more likely to perceive themselves as selfish, even if they are not actually being selfish.)

Emilia – ISFPEmilia

“I don’t have much experience with people, so I don’t have friends. I’m naive and not worldly, so I say strange things sometimes. And the reason I want to be the ruler of this kingdom is really really selfish.”

Apparently the popular opinion on Emilia is INFJ. However, one clear indication that she’s an FP lies in the way she frames her reasoning. While she can certainly be empathetic, helpful and comforting, Emilia doesn’t portray herself that way when first meeting Subaru. Instead, Emilia openly states that she’s helping him for her own benefit, and never tries to describe herself as selfless. She even claims a personal motivation for helping the little girl in town, rather than saying she did it for the sake of the little girl. Emilia also refuses to say anything simply because someone else wants her too. Ultimately, this is all because she is wrapped up in her own feelings, refusing to act outside of them. As for ISFP specifically, one good example of her Se is shown during her time in the forest when she names the locations on her map very literally, using physical associations rather than abstract connections. She’s also not one to ask for a lot of detailed information, and tends toward being vague or accidentally leaving out information, which is indicative of the Ni/Se axis. Beyond that, generally speaking, Emilia is quick to act, goes with the flow, and doesn’t have any grand aspirations or dreams beyond wanting to unfreeze the people from her home.

Roswaal L. Mathers – INTJRoswaal

“You’re ordinary, less than ordinary. What could you possibly do that would have an impact? In the sanctuary, no one can violate the feelings carved into you by time. No one! And that circumstance will not waver. My four hundred years won’t change. They won’t be overturned by the likes of you. You are insignificant.”

Roswaal relies on careful planning and scheming to ensure the events written in his Book of Wisdom comes to pass. He always has countermeasures in place to ensure things play out as they should. Subaru is able to knock him off balance when he brings in an “unknown factor.” When confronting him, Subaru says, “Now you’re getting it. The first gear’s come out of alignment. Everything you’ve been setting up so very carefully has been disrupted by an unknown factor.”
Generally speaking, Roswaal acts in extremely underhanded and sinister ways, loyal only to his intimate feelings for Echidna. He’s determined to be reunited with her one day, even though that may not be possible. He sees people as mere collateral, unimportant when it comes to achieving his goal. Roswaal freaks out when Ram expresses her feelings to him, claiming that emotions are cheap and illogical.

Beatrice – ISTJBeatrice

“Mother and what she said is absolute.”

Beatrice was a tricky one. We noticed that popular opinion on her is INTP, but we didn’t see any evidence for that. For starters, Beatrice has no perceiver-like flexibility or apparent desire to explore the world around her, nor is she driven by a need for autonomy. Rather, she rigidly adheres to the last orders left by her mother, with no attempt to find wiggle room. She waits 400 years, isolated in the library, because the book of prophecy is blank (offering no guidance), and her mother was unclear on who she needed to wait for. She doesn’t act on any guesses or appear to guess as to what the lack of text means. She changes nothing and continues to wait, typically only leaving the library unless obligated to for some reason. (SJ duty-orientation.) This all suggests under-developed Ne. With others, Beatrice is incredibly blunt, fact or data-focused, frequently complains about being inconvenienced, and hates when she’s not in control. Therefore, the most likely theory in my opinion is ISTJ. We did consider ESTJ for a while.

Rem – ISFJRem

“No matter what painful things happens, even when it looks like you’ll lose… when no one else in the world believes in you… when you don’t even believe in yourself… I will believe in you!”

Rem is a very supportive character once she accepts the individual. Rem is also wholly devoted to her sister, Ram, and feels like she has to make up for the fact that Ram lost her horn protecting Rem. In addition, in spite of being more objectively powerful than Ram, Rem proclaims Ram to be more powerful because Ram used to be more powerful before she lost her horn. This demonstrates her Si fixation on the past, not allowing current data to override. Initially, Rem is very suspicious of Subaru and even kills him in certain loops. However, Rem eventually forms a deep bond with him after he manages to snap her out of her battle rage. She falls in love with him and becomes wholly devoted to him, giving him all the support and encouragement he needs. She puts his feelings and needs above her own. For instance, when Rem and Subaru contemplate running way, Rem envisions a perfect life scenario (in detail) together with him, wishing they could follow through with it. She, however, states that he isn’t smiling nor happy when he offers that to her, and she could never accept a future where he isn’t smiling. She also clearly recognizes his romantic feelings are directed at Emilia and not her. Rem is satisfied to have unrequited love and continue to support him anyways.

Ram – ENTJRam

“He’s weak, useless, completely incompetent and he can’t even make a decent cup of tea.”

Ram’s main focus seem to be on competency and objective truth, which makes her highly critical of others. Of course, Subaru is the easy mark. She’s constantly berating him for his failures or mistakes. However, on the flip side, she notices his inability to read and write and immediately volunteers her time to teach him. Ram is pragmatic, and decisive. During a the raid on Roswaal’s mansion, Subaru tries to question why a Mabeast would be there, and Rem dismisses the question by saying, “There’s no time now. It’s here. Deal with it.” This demonstrates her Te-Se, doubling down on solving the immediate problem. In addition, Ram is quick to confront others, and make accusations based on assumptions that she’s made. Sometimes these assumptions are shockingly accurate, while others not so much. This all seems Ni. She also appears to not be detail-oriented or very focused on precision, which is why she’s bad at cleaning and can’t wrap Roswaal’s wounds without injuring him further.

Echidna – ENTPEchidna

“All of the results that come about in the process of you getting additional chances will contribute vastly to the satisfaction of my curiosity! We’ll agonize over, struggle with, and solve the same problems together.”

Echidna is driven by her insatiable curiosity, which is the clearest indication of dominant Ne. She’s fascinated with Subaru, and looks forward to his visits. She tries to convince him to contract with her to so she can share in the journey and solve his problems with him. (This last part demonstrates her Ti wanting to solve puzzles.) She acts friendly and welcoming, using her tertiary Fe to thinly mask her sinister nature. It takes Subaru a little while to fully realize that she’s not actually on his side, even though she reminds him plainly several times that she’s an evil witch. Echidna plays games with others for her own amusement, twisting her words and withholding critical information. Her tertiary Fe also services in her for Subaru to thank her and make her feel appreciated. We considered INTP briefly, but a good example of her Ne dominance can be seen in her treatment of Beatrice. She leaves Beatrice with a vague command, with no goal beyond satisfying her curiosity as to which potential outcome Beatrice would play out.

Otto Suwen – INFJOtto

“If we’re talking about whether he’s much of anything as is, I suppose not. But I look forward to seeing what flowers bloom from him, so I keep pruning and brushing off the bugs.”

To be honest, there is a slight possibility that Otto is an ENFJ, but INFJ seems to fit a little better. Otto is a polite individual who mediates conflict whenever necessary. He’s prone to worrying about others, which once gets him jokingly called a “mom”. He can be assertive though for Fe motivations, such as physically attacking Subaru for not being willing to ask for his help. Otto also scolds Subaru for putting on an act around his friends, rather than trusting them and relying on them to help. Unfortunately, Otto struggles with feeling invisible, which tends to be a common struggle for auxiliary Fe users in particular. Generally speaking, he’s fairly timid and prone to blending in, so people frequently fail to notice him and find him forgettable. As for dominant Ni, Otto is prone to using metaphors and analogies. He’s also referred to as having keen instincts. Otto is willing to take on risks and make bets, although he prefers to carefully consider the odds of winning beforehand.

Crusch Karsten – ESTJCrusch

“I absolutely loathe the thought of going on with my life knowing nothing. If I have a choice in the matter, I would rather choose for myself than simply do as someone says.”

Crusch is an extremely pragmatic individual. She talks in facts rather than wants, and states things plainly when conversing with others. This initially confuses Subaru, thinking that when she explained a situation to him, that it meant she would be willing to help. She was quick to correct him, and explain that it was not strategically advantageous for her to do so. She quickly adds on that his proposition to team up was not good for his candidate, Emilia, either, in the way that he proposed it. Crusch is a strategic thinker and a natural leader, desiring to be in the midst of all the plans that she is developing and acting out. She does not shy away from the battlefield, and she is seen many times leading her troops into battle, or otherwise putting herself into harm’s way. When she loses her memory, Crusch tells Felix that she would rather do something rather than nothing at all, which indicates that she leads with an extroverted function. She is still willing to take action even with little to no information on her end (due to the memory loss).

Priscilla Barielle – ENTJPriscilla

“Be quiet, peasant. When ideals are all talk, they don’t have any value.”

Priscilla focuses on asserting her dominance and maintaining control. She likes to emphasize her authority and superiority to those around her. She views others as her property, claiming ownership of them even when they are not her underlings. The prime example the songstress, who refuses to serve under her, claiming that she belongs to the world. Priscilla reframes her statement by stating that everything in the world is hers, so the songstress is as well. As another indication of Te, Priscilla judges actions based on whether the individual deserves punishment or reward, which shows the objective nature of her logic (Te) because the focus is on the result, success of failure. Priscilla is also one to not make elaborate plans, but rather confront things head-on, relying on her strength and a simple strategy. This lines up more with Ni/Se, since she’s not concerned with running scenarios. She enjoys provoking others and to some extent, playing mind games. At one point, she states that her victory is inevitable but it wouldn’t hurt to have some fun and chaos along the way, which is indicative of tertiary Se.

Julius Juukulius – ISTJJulius

“Too many uncertainties involved in relying on him.”

Julius is a stiff individual, always acting strict and proper. Julius clashes a lot with Subaru, due to their very differing personalities. Later on, he points out that Subaru’s “reckless refusal to adhere to a black-and-white way of thinking never changes” which demonstrates an accurate contrast between the two, with Julius erring on the side of black-and-white thinking. He can be very blunt and critical with others, in addition to having high standards for himself and those around him. This is common for auxiliary Te and tertiary Fi. When it comes to dominant Si and inferior Ne, Julius is concerned with uncertainties. After Subaru loses his memory in the tower, Subaru over hears Julius pointing the uncertainties involved in relying on Subaru, viewing him as a liability now that he’s lost his memory. In addition, when he gets a hunch about who the “Stick Swinger” is, Julius doesn’t want to share it with the others until he’s absolutely sure.

Garfiel Tinzel – ESTPGarfiel

“You gotta act on a ganglion without thinking.”

Garfiel is action-oriented and impulsive. When Subaru, Emilia, and Otto enter the Sanctuary, he attacks them on instinct, not bothering to ask questions or give them a chance to explain themselves. He assumes them to be enemies of the Sanctuary, and refers to them as outsiders. For the most part, Garfiel uses impersonal logic in conversations and frames things in a collective way, rather than focusing on how something impacted him personally. For instance, he says that Frederica abandoned “us” rather than him specifically. In addition, in an argument with Subaru, Garfiel says that Roswaal doesn’t care about the Sanctuary, the old hag, or anybody else. He keeps the focus on everything and everyone else rather than himself. This is all more indicative of Ti/Fe than Fi/Te. Garfiel also has a strong sense of loyalty, and his role as a protector is extremely important to him. His loyalty to others and those he views as worth following keeps his impulsive nature in check. He’s able to control his emotions, and work with those he hates or distrusts when it’s required, often putting up a neutral front in those circumstances.

Wilhelm van Astrea – ISTPWilhelm

Wilhelm is man of few words who typically conceals his emotions. He gets singularly focused when he has a goal that he wishes to complete and does not hesitate to strike when the opportunity presents itself. When he finds out that Subaru has a plan to lure out the White Whale, he doesn’t say anything, and it takes Crusch to reveal that he has business to settle with the monster. He is observant of traits and details that he is familiar with. He is the only person that comments that Subaru’s eyes are those of someone who has stared down death many times. He makes a leap based off of that observation, and assumes Subaru has some kind of combat background. He is extremely emotionally repressed, which seems to indicate some kind of inferior feeling function. He refuses to audibly tell his wife (of many years) even a single time that he loved her. He makes excuses like claiming that his actions demonstrated it. He also makes a snap judgement when the Divine Blessing moves off his wife, and blames his grandson for her death. He later deeply regrets this, but seems incapable of finding a way to reconcile with his grandson.
