Frieren: Beyond Journeyโs End: Frieren (INTP)
Frieren: Beyond Journeyโs End is a bittersweet anime, focused on the adventure after the adventure. Itโs an interesting take that we donโt often see. As a character, Frieren presents like the prototypical INTP, which made her easy to identify. Of course, we made sure to consider other theories for Frieren, and double-check our evidence, but INTP was the only one with any significance. If youโre interested in reading about other characters from this show, check out Frieren: Beyond Journeyโs End: Fern (ISTJ) In the near future, we also intend to type Stark, assuming thereโs enough evidence.
Ti:
โMuch like the demonโs magic, the principles behind the bulk of it arenโt understood. So itโs not the sort of thing that holds my interest.โ
โYouโre right. Iโm doing this for me.โ
Frieren presents as emotionally detached, and oftentimes, indifferent. Throughout the show, she continually struggles to portray any kind of emotion and form relationships with others. At one point, she shares with Fern that prior to choosing a hobby, she struggled with apathy. So, unsurprisingly, Frieren has no issues making hard decisions that others might emotionally (or morally) struggle with, like killing the young demon girl who called out for her mother. Of course, sometimes the decisions she tries to make end up being selfishly apathetic, and Fern steps in to stop her.
Frieren has an analytical nature, by default. She needs to understand the principles and the reasoning behind things. For instance, she explains that certain types of magic donโt interest her because the principles behind them arenโt understood. Similarly, before killing the young demon, sheโs sure to ask the girl why she called out for a mother that she never knew. It didnโt make any sense, so Frieren needed to reconcile the logical contradiction.
Ultimately, Frieren even approaches her own emotions analytically, which is why she starts retracing her adventures with Himmel and the others. She essentially tells Fern that sheโs trying to figure out if remembering her adventures is important to her, if they hold any meaning.
Ne:
โMany important historical discoveries were made by mages who trusted in that one percent chance. Letโs follow their lead. Come on, Fern.โ
โWe lack the information to make a conclusion. We should consider the possibility that it doesnโt have a mind.โ
Frieren has little drive for physical experiences. This is made clear when she foregoes seeing the sunrise with her friends to spend her night reading books, as she always did. Instead, Frieren enjoys collecting spells and endlessly gaining knowledge, something that common for Ti-Ne. Sheโs not aiming for any specific spell, but rather gets excited by each one that she discovers. Ultimately, she seems to enjoy the novelty, and the possibilities they represent.
Frieren naturally pays attention to possibilities, finding them more desirable than concrete data. Of course, she considers all possibilities when strategizing. However, this tendency of hers much more prominently shows up in the reason she falls for fake treasure chests, in spite of the data proving them to be mimics. During the mage exam, when Fern tries to discourage her from opening a mimic, Frieren explains that the one percent possibility is worth the risk. After all, there could be a rare grimoire inside.
Lastly, Frieren tends to give long, in-depth explanations, regardless of the circumstances, which is common for high Ne users like the INTP. For instance, when Stark asks about whether they can make the carriage levitate (during a critical, time-sensitive situation), Frieren doesnโt just say โnoโ. Instead, she starts to give them a lecture, explaining the entire theory, which would ultimately lead up to a โnoโ. Stark stops her because they didnโt have time for that.
Si:
โWherever possible, Iโd like to retrace the adventures I had with Himmel and the others before all signs of it fade.โ
โThis meeting. It reminds me of the many whispers my party exchanged in dungeons.โ
Fern actually spends most of the show fixated on her Si. Itโs probably not fair to say sheโs looping, because her Ne is definitely active. However, she spends the show actively analyzing her past, retracing her adventures with Himmel and the others. Frieren replays the moments, and tries to redo some of them correctly. For instance, she watches the sunrise that she skipped out on watching with them before, only this time she watches it with Fern. Frieren actively compares present moments to past ones, as she strives to figure out and understand what it all means to her.
Fe:
โFrierenโs sharp, but she can struggle to read emotions.โ โ Heiter
โAre you asking I get to know you? How needy.โ
โMaybe we should find you a spell for understanding peopleโs feelings.โ โ Fern
Frierenโs greatest struggles lies within the realm of emotions and relationships, which is common for inferior Fe. Frieren doesnโt understand how to read emotions and interact with them. It can cause her to act insensitively, by accident, and struggle to connect with others. Heiter explains that sheโs terrible at developing a mutual understanding with others, making working with her challenging.
In the past, Frieren takes this even farther, by devaluing relationships in general. For instance, when she believes that her master is asking that she get to know her, Frieren responds with โhow needy.โ For the longest time, Frieren remains overly detached from others, making no effort to connect and seeing little value in it. However, later on, when trying to retrace her steps, Frieren has begun developing her Fe, hence her desire to discover the value those memories and relationships hold for her.

Thanks to hearing about this show on the blog I started watching some of it, so thanks for introducing me to it lol.

I think itโs interesting how in most understandings of MBTI itโs thought that you develop your lower functions later in life (or just that it takes a certain amount of time, usually) but despite being an extremely long-lived elf Frieren just started taking an interest in Fe matters just now, haha. I guess it shows how much more she preferred using her other functions, or her long lifespan made her somewhat complacent until the spoiler event in the first episode. (โI have time, I can focus on that stuff later.โ)
Though, they probably werenโt thinking of fictional, nigh-immortal elves when they came up with that principle, haha. Still, I imagine itโs an interesting dilemma when trying to type long-lived characters like this. I still remember a discussion around Yodaโs MBTI typing and whether his long lifespan meant his inferior functions would be developed to the point where they donโt look or seem inferior anymore.
A pretty big focus in the show is Frieren developing an interest in her Fe strongly because of Himmel. So before her adventures to the demon king, she never felt the need. It was only after she met Himmel (I personally think heโs obviously Fe dom but could be wrong).
Yes, the age factor with a character who lives super long can make it difficult. Of course, with someone like Frieren, the show kind of makes it seem like sheโs also maturing slower since sheโs going to live so much longer.
Iโm glad you enjoyed the show!
โ the show kind of makes it seem like sheโs also maturing slower since sheโs going to live so much longer.โ
Oh, that does make a lot of sense. Thanks for addressing my rambling, haha.
Oh, so youโre saying it happened DURING the adventure? Iโm only up to episode 7, so maybe I havenโt seen enough flashbacks for context. Though, she did say the reason for her hobby was because a fool praised her for her spells. (I always thought she was referring to Himmel.) I always thought the Fe catalyst wasโฆ what happened in Episode 1. Though, that probably contributed.
And I can definitely see Himmel being an Fe dom, he never refused the statues and he seems to reeeally soak in the praise, haha. Thereโs also his altruism, even though thatโs not exclusively an Fe thing. Though, it could be an Fi self-image thing, Iunno.
I wasnโt exactly referring to time periods Frieren developped interest in her Fe. Iโm trying to put emphasis on Himmel being the pivot. He is the catalyst (ofc it wasnโt just him, over time the adventures with the hero party made her develop interest). So basically, Iโm saying it was happening during the adventure but it really started after the adventure was over. Without spoiling too much, youโll see later that Frieren showed signs of interest in Fe even before she officially joined the party and it has something to do with a flower spell. And yes, she was always referring to Himmel when talking about complimenting spells.

Oh, that should add another dimension to the viewing experience. Thanks for the info, Iโll try to keep an eye out while watching the scenes from the past!
