Pirates of the Caribbean: Will Turner (ISFP)
Fi:
โIf all I have achieved here is that the hangman will earn two pairs of boots instead of one, so be it. At least my conscience will be clear.โ
โNo cause is lost if there is but one fool left to fight for it.โ
โI make a point of avoiding familiarity with pirates.โ
Will Turner from Pirates of the Caribbean is a very clear Fi dominant. Heโs idealistic, and states some sort of ideal nearly every time he opens his mouth. Upon first encountering Jack, Will fights him on principle, because he had kidnapped Elizabeth earlier that day. He accuses Jack of cheating, as if too naive to realize that a pirate wouldnโt be bound by a code of honor. Heโs the type that refuses to back down or step aside if it means abandoning one of his self-imposed rules or ideals. Thatโs shown in the many occasions that he refuses to let Jack escape, and attempts he makes to save Jack at the end of the first movie. (An attempt which by all accounts should have been very clearly futile.)
Will easily takes offense when something is suggested that contradicts his convictions or self-image. Jack Sparrow does this on many occasions. He suggests that Will is obsessed with treasure, which angers Will instantly. Jack also informs Will that his father was, in fact, a pirate, and Will adamantly refuses to believe him.
Of course, heโs very clearly an introvert, which can be seen in his general quiet nature and initial awkwardness toward Elizabeth. In addition, Jack makes a crack about him failing to seize the moment, which points away from him being an extraverted perceiving dominant.
Se:
โNow may be the only time!โ
โI could do this all day!โ
Will is seen throughout the movies mostly wanting to interact with his environment rather than to speculate about things. He is more prone to just wanting to jump right in and start doing something rather than talking about what to do next. When frustrated and insisting they need to go after Elizabeth after she has been kidnapped, he buries a hatchet into the map, proclaiming that what is being done is not good enough. This display can be interpreted as a mixture of both Se and Te. He is also seen in the second movie agitatedly burying his knife into a wooden table over and over again. Although this is a weak proof, you could argue that this is a Se tick as it has him subconsciously yet directly interacting with his environment.
In general, he appears to remain silent for the most part unless he is directly involved and/or doing something, physically speaking. This could point back to the fact that Se users can struggle to interact with others or engage when there isnโt an activity to bond over. In addition to this, Will frequently appears to remain on standby throughout the movies, observing the scene until he is actually needed. He doesnโt do a lot of side interacting with other characters or anything of that nature and seems to mostly keep to himself.
Ni:
We had some problems identifying Willโs Ni. Itโs not that Will is a badly written character, but the fact of the matter is that he is simply serving a supporting role, and as such is not as fleshed out and developed like the rest of the main cast. One particular event in the movies seemed to indicate Ni to us. There is a scene in the second movie where Will challenges Davy Jones to a game of liarโs dice. Unwilling to let his son risk his own soul, Bootstrap also joins. After the game, Will is frustrated with his fatherโs sacrifice and explains that the game was never about winning or losing; he was only using it to get Davy Jones to reveal the location of the key. It is this kind of hidden motive or abstract way of getting what you want (an intention veiled by another perceived desire) that one might expect from Ni.
It also may be worth pointing out that Will tends to state certainties and conclusions, rather displaying open guesswork, which suggests Ni.
Te:
Will is very straightforward and to the point. While mostly a laid back and easy going individual, you can see moments of explosive inferior Te come out of him when extremely distressed. He starts the movies with a very hard line view of pirates and believes they should have a harsh punishment for their actions. However, you can see in Will a general lack of assertiveness which is a common inferior Te weakness. He is often being overruled or being drug along by stronger extraverted dominants like Jack or Elizabeth.
