Ni:

“This must be… destiny”
“The key to unraveling this mystery is somewhere on that island”
“Making it here was too easy. Something’s not right”
“I have a hunch about these poneglyphs.”
“With one push of a button, they summoned a terrible demon. Now it rears its head again, aiming its sights on the friends I searched so hard to find. The more that I wish for us to be together, the more my ugly fate bears its fangs at you.”

Nico Robin’s goal, even as a young child, is to unravel the mysteries of the world, to discover what happened in the blank century. Thus, she spends her life seeking the poneglyphs. Robin is very insightful, intuitive, and oftentimes speaks in an abstract or symbolic way. She seeks out the meaning behind everything she sees, and usually pinpoints truth with relative accuracy. She doesn’t typically spout multiple what-if scenarios, or display any wide-eyed wonder. (Even as a kid, when she meets the giant, she is completed uninterested in the novelty). Instead, Robin is usually shown suggesting one single answer based on her observations and hunches. One can see this clearly in the Skypeia Arc and the Thriller Bark Arc. On both, Robin keeps searching for the reason why behind every oddity and ultimately suggests a probable explanation. Robin is not afraid to present seemingly unrealistic explanations to strange occurrences. For instance, when the log pose needle was pointing upwards, Robin is quick to suggest that the next island is in the Sky. She generally thinks out-of-the-box, not allowing what seems unreasonable to prevent her from reaching the final conclusion. Robin notices patterns and ponders on their significance. For instance, she noticed that Luffy shares the same middle initial as Roger and comments that there has to be some historical significance to it. She specifically asks Luffy what the meaning of the ‘D’ is and why those with that middle initial fight. She also calls out patterns on Thriller Bark and suggests a reason for each. Robin follows her hunches and, at times, makes ominous predictions about the future. Franky even chides her at one point for these ominous predictions. Robin is also shown attributing certain happenings to fate or destiny, and worrying about both.

Fe:

“In the past, it seemed like I was always wound too tight from repressing my emotions. I never got the chance to smile.”
“You don’t have to kill every living thing we meet. It’s kind of rude.”
“No. I’m not embarrassing myself like that… As human beings, you should be ashamed.”

Robin’s past has made her very reserved, emotionally-speaking, but the more I watch her, the more Fe I see in spite of that fact. For starters, Robin frequently chides people for rudeness or bad manners, whether they be enemies or friends. She even chides Zoro for killing everything living thing they met in a dangerous forest they were in one night, stating that it was “kind of rude.” Robin is also very observant of other people, and responds appropriately to what she sees. Robin plays the big sister role with Nami and even a young girl they meet along their journeys. Robin is generally very supportive and emotionally sympathetic. She sees Zoro being led around by children, finds it amusing, but doesn’t mock him at all or tell the crew about it later, knowing how embarrassed he was by the whole thing. You also see her helping Chopper stay hidden from the Foxy pirates and distracting him with a game later. On Thriller Bark, Robin is even shown noticing that Cerberus looks down, and being instantly chided by Zoro for pitying the evil creature. When Brooke first joins the crew, Robin notices how troubled he is, asks what’s wrong, and then advises him that judging yourself through the eyes of others is a mistake, which seems like exactly the sort of advice a mature Fe might give. When Robin first joins the crew, she seeks to gain favor with everyone, which was one of my first clues that Robin is not an aux Te like I once thought. she bribes Nami, goofs off with Chopper, Usopp, and Luffy, and tries to bring out a coat to Zoro one night, stating concern that he might catch cold. As a girl, Robin states that she just wants to be treated like everyone else. In addition, Robin avoids certain behavior because she finds it embarrassing, which is an Fe tendency. Robin is also shown with the stereotypical self-sacrificing nature that is typically attributed to Fe; namely, when she turns herself in to the World Government in order to protect the crew. Although, she still takes the time to thank them for all of their kindness and explains that her darkness would only bring them down.

Ti:

“Well look at that, you’re not gutless.”
“A shark in the sky.. a sky shark?”

Robin frequently an abstract style of reasoning that is characteristic of Ti, especially when combined with Ni. This is very pronounced in the Skypeia Arc. For instance, she notices the presence of dirt on a sky island, rationalizes that dirt doesn’t belong there, determines that it must not be from there, and continues building conclusions off of this initial observation using that “if-then” style of reasoning out until she determines Upper Yard to be the missing piece of island from the land below. Robin is also shown relying heavily on her Ti, as a result of her traumatic past. She is shown making blunt observations at times, and oftentimes masking her own emotions. However, she is never shown attempting to control her environment, like a Te user would. She for the most part just rolls with the punches, letting Luffy do whatever he has decided to do. Robin and Zoro appear similar in this way and in their style of reasoning, which makes sense considering that they share the same top 4 functions.

Se:

Robin is not quick to loosen up and join the partying. She’ll be present and join in on the feasting, but for the most part, she just remains in the general vicinity as an amused observer. In battle scenarios, Robin plays the role of a strategist, analyst, or long distance fighter. She crutches on her devil fruit ability, and is not typically shown physically involving herself in the battle, beyond the extra limbs that she grows out of people and nearby objects. She’ll fight on a more physical level only when forced to.
