One Piece: Franky (ENTP)
Ne:
โSo how do we want to approach this then? I got a ton of plans. One of emโs gotta work.โ
โItโs like heโs allergic to sanity or somethingโ โ Iceberg
Se/Ni looks for one answer (or path or idea) and focuses in on it, while Ne/Si entertains many and jumps between them. Franky is very creative, inventive, and full of ideas. When building the Thousand Sunny, Franky incorporates several ingenious features into the design, from a โMini-Merryโ to a submarine, and more. He comes up up with several unique weapons to arm the Sunny with. However, not every feature he adds to the Sunny is necessary, for instance, the large decorative aquarium. When the crew has to come up with names for the Sunny, Franky instantly begins spouting idea after idea, but the crew latches onto the very first one he suggests. The show relegates Frankyโs many alternate ideas to background noise as the crew discusses their new shipโs name. Even when young, Franky is shown exercising his creativity in ship building, and later when turning himself into a cyborg with many unique capabilities. Franky is quick to sing, play the guitar, and dance. Even in the middle of a dangerous situation, heโs been shown whipping out his guitar and playing a song that he wrote. Heโs energetic, lively, and impulsive, making it very clear that heโs leading with an extraverted perceiving function. When he is younger, Franky is fascinated with the blueprints for the secret weapon from the moment he sees them, and just wants to build it rather than keep it hidden. The fascination with new things is characteristic of Ne users.
Ti:
โListen, a ship is born with one promise, to carry you across the sea from one shore to another. Thatโs her sole purpose, the reason for her existence; which means, when the time comes that a ship can no longer carry you across the seaโฆThen that promise has been broken and sheโs no longer a ship.โ
โI always thought Robin was some evil monsterโฆWhat if Iโm confused about other stuff too? How am I supposed to go on?โ
Franky is shown saying some very clear Ti-esque statements. He doesnโt adhere to the black and white definitions of things, but uses a more relative logic. When discussing the Going Merry with Usopp, Franky cites his own definition of a ship, essentially explaining that if a ship can no longer function as a ship it is not a ship. Another example can be seen when Franky learns the truth of Robin. Having believed her to be evil, he is shocked by the truth, and then like any strong Ti user, becomes immediately concerned with whether or not other things he knows is wrong as well. Franky also displays a general preference toward logic over emotions. When younger, he doesnโt understand why they would plan a celebration for Tomโs innocence on judgment day simply because Tom was never guilt to begin with. He is also shown accidentally firing a victory cannon ball on an agent and then just laughing, not at all caring about what heโd just done. Franky is also shown declaring that the Straw Hats make no sense with how they are so stubborn when it comes to their friends. Heโs a rebel and rule breaker, with a rather vague moral code. He does whatever he wants whenever he wants to do it. He naturally settles into a mobster/gangster style role on Water 7.
Fe:
Franky is surprisingly emotionally expressive. He is quick to join in on an emotional moment, break out his guitar, and start singing. However, he is often shown being embarrassed about his emotions when they are sincere. When deciding to leave Water 7 with the Straw Hats, Franky has to find an excuse to allow himself to cry in public. Franky is very group oriented and very protective of whatever group he is a part of. This is demonstrated by how he forms band of men on Water 7 and deals with them. He also feels bad for Usopp when realizing Usopp has left the Straw Hats and invites him to join the Franky Family. He isnโt shown being overly focused on his identity like an Fi might. When Iceberg gives Franky his name because his real name if too complicated, Franky seems completely unbothered.
Si:
Frankyโs inferior Si, in a healthy sense, shows up in how detailed his inventions are. Franky adds small unnecessary details that one wouldnโt typically think to add. Some examples would be the fridge with a lock for Sanji, the aquarium onboard the Sunny, and the many hair style options he gives himself during the timeskip. He also doesnโt develop his own unique goal in life, but instead decides that his goal is to be just like Tom. Frankyโs negative Si shows up in how he canโt handle his ships being used for evil. He completely gives up on shipbuilding as a result, and gathers a team specifically for the purpose of dismantling ships. (Basically, rebounding from his negative past.) He refuses to leave Water 7 when asked to by Iceberg, for the sake of protecting the plans for the secret weapon, and remains on Water 7.ย He even sets up his โtop secret baseโ in the same location in which him, Tom, and Iceberg used to build ships. Franky spends his time on Water 7 essentially stuck, not moving forward because he believes itโs his duty to stay on the island. He has an incredibly hard time agreeing to leave with Luffy.

I would argue that Franky is an ESTP. He is primarily a doer. His work as a shipwright is purely anchored in the sensory realm, with all the different features/ideas he adds to the Sunny showing a strong aesthetic flair. Can you please provide examples of Frankyโs Ne tendencies to abstract things outside of the sensory realm or his intuitive capacity to read situations. You do have some interesting arguments for inferior Si that I canโt dispute.
Aesthetic flair is more of a symptom of lower Se than higher as it is a relatively weak use of Se. The average STP is less interested in aesthetics and more in functionality. Franky has a tendency to improve the sunny and himself in ways that are completely pointless, like, for instance, all of his hair styles after the 2 year gap, the fish tank, and grass on the deck. This to me points away from the Se/Ni axis. Ne is quirky, off the wall, and full of ideas, which Franky definitely is. Ne users are most certainly capable of appreciating aesthetics. I know several who do.
Let me also point to an Se dom who Iโm pretty sure is undisputed: Fire Fist Ace. Ace doesnโt really have any aesthetic flair. Heโs relatively minimal with his dress and life style. We can also look at Zoro as well, a relatively widely accepted ISTP. Both of them are focused solely on functionality rather than aesthetics.
As to abstractionsโฆ Well, first off, technically, pretty much any action taken is done in the physical, sensory realm. I struggle to believe that Ne users are incapable of putting their many ideas into action, and only ever pointlessly speculate into open air. Secondly, Ni is more about reading situations rather than Ne. Ne generates ideas and possibilities, which Franky is seen doing.
I do not have anything I can really use to argue against the points of Franky as an ENFP and the part about inferior Si is spot on. Both Ne and Ni are intuitive functions, thus both focus on abstract pattern-recognition and so Ne is quite capable of seeing the intuitive potential- meaning reading between the lines beyond concrete information. Ne wants to speculate on what are the different possibilities are of a situation. Having recently looked at his (https://funkymbtifiction.tumblr.com/post/164238909980/misunderstood-ne) + (https://funkymbtifiction.tumblr.com/post/180818143345/high-ne), Iโm wondering beyond aside from his use of it in terms of creativity when it comes to his inventions and creations + overall energetic eccentricity, what other ways do they manifest itself?
I disagree with the way many people view the intuition functions. Those articles you sent appear to be Ne biased (attributing everything positive about Ni to Ne, while openly discarding the negatives) and a lot is actually Fi, not Ne. Most of the information out there is written by intuitives, and in general appears to have an intuitive bias. Part of me wants to sidetrack and address some of it, but I wonโt because it would take too long. Bottom line: everyone with maturity can reach a point where they can โread between the linesโ or โjust knowโ whatโs going on without someone outright saying, whether that be via logic, feeling, concrete observation, or intuition. I have โintuitivelyโ made predictions on many occasions, which has shocked those around me, but Iโm a sensor.
As far as Iโm concerned, Franky demonstrates what Iโve known to be a more realistic Ne dom. I grew up with an ENFP, one of my parents is an ENTP, and of course, Iโve known others. Their Ne came out primarily in either worrying about possibilities (in the case of an unhealthy one), eccentricity, creativity in a fantastical story telling sense, and excitement over new ideas or concepts, regardless of their current real-life usefulness. They also loved dabbling in different hobbies and essentially experimenting/exploring with no goal in mind, whereas I could never do that type of โtinkeringโ without a goal. They were the โwhoops I just accidentally discovered this cool thingโ kinda people. Ne users in my experience consider all of the possibilities and logically (not intuitively) narrow them down to the most probable one.
Ultimately, Franky is a side character and doesnโt get a lot of screen time. The Ne evidence youโre looking for from him probably isnโt there, and as far as Iโm concerned, is not indicative of a high Ne user anyway.
The author of these articles did mentions some negatives. It does talk about how Ne can read much too much into things. How Ne can actually screw up in its predictions because of missing the details. How Ne can be unrealistic and impatient in seeing a new possibility, neglecting the details involved in making it and the more practical logistics involved. But you are correct in that intuition is not going to be accurate a lot of the time especially given incorrect information or just leaping without looking with intuition. Ne and Ni are both into pattern-recognition. Ne is convergent in exploration of possibilities, Ni prefers narrows down to a singular truth. I agree with your descriptions of how Si/Ne works (in whatever order) vs Ni/Se (in whatever order). I believe intuition is still intuition- it means a stronger capacity to play and trust these insights or at least consider them a viable possibility as an Ne user. You are right there is a lot of intuitive bias in the community itself and it is good for sensors to have their voice heard for hearing MBTI from their perspective. But I still believe the points presented are valid even with the points addressed by your latest article.
โBut you are correct in that intuition is not going to be accurate a lot of the timeโ
I didnโt intend to imply that intuition was going to frequently be inaccurate. I usually just like to emphasize that intuition can be wrong just as easily as it can be right, depending on the person. Subject to error, basically.
โI believe intuition is still intuition- it means a stronger capacity to play and trust these insights or at least consider them a viable possibility as an Ne user.โ
I donโt disagree with this. An Ne (or Ni) user is more likely to trust their intuitive theory while a sensor may drop theirs too quickly if the sensory data appears to contradict it.
My view of Franky is that not a lot is seen of him, and he appears to show the surface level characteristics of an Ne dom, in addition to inferior Si.
